482901 2006-09-06 03:46:00 I was given an external HD while in Japan and I'd love to use it here without using a step down transformer, so it can be a little more portable. The transformer that came with it is a:
Logitec LA-24WCS
Input: 100v ~ 50/60Hz 70VA
Output: 12V - 2.0A 24VA
Output Power: 24W Max

am I able to buy a transformer in NZ that can replace that one so I dont have to use a step down transformer?

thanks!

482902 2006-09-06 04:03:00 Such things are available, but you might have to hunt a bit to get the 2A rating, without paying too much. (DSE and Jaycar have switchmode supplies which will do it, but they aren't cheap, because they are better than needed for this job. But they may still be comparable with the cost of a 230-110 transformer, as well as being smaller).

I'd have a look in Cash Converters or some place like that which have a bin of various power adapters surplus to their requirements (because the gear they came with doesn't work :) ). You might find one for about $10 or so. :D

Just check the output plug size , and the polarity. You might have only one chance to get the polarity right. :D Smoke can escape when the polarity is reversed, if the manufacturer hasn't built in protection. Plugs are easily changed.

I'm having the same problem. How did you solve it?
Did you find out the "output plug size , and the polarity"?

Thanks!
