483100 2006-09-07 06:58:00 Hi all, I'm about to replace and upgrade my RAM. I've got a GA-7N400 and I'm wondering what would be the best RAM configuration to take full advantage of my mobo. I've been trying to research online but it's sending me :waughh: If anyone has any experience or ideas it would be great! thanks!

system specs:
AMD 2600, 768MB of RAM, and an ATI 9600 XT 128MB

483101 2006-09-07 10:47:00 That motherboard can use dual channel RAM and up to DDR400. To utilise the dual channel mode you need two sticks of RAM of the same size, ideally the same brand. For example 2x 512 MB of DDR400 to give you a total of 1024 MB RAM.

I take it from your current configuration you have 1x 256 and 1x 512 MB of RAM. Do you know what speed (DDR) the 512 stick is? If you could get another one the same, it would be cheaper than getting two new sticks of RAM so that you can run it in dual mode. You would remove the 256 MB stick completely.

483102 2006-09-07 11:18:00 thanks Jen. Do you or anyone know if it would be possible for me to run 4gig on this mobo board? bizzack (7739)
483103 2006-09-07 12:41:00 3GB seems to be the max

Type: Dual Channel DDR400/ 333/ 266- 184pin
Max capacity: Up to 3GB by 4 DIMM slots

483104 2006-09-07 13:59:00 so would i be best to install 2 1gig sticks, and 2 512mb sticks (total 3gig) to take advantage of the Dual Channel feature? bizzack (7739)
483105 2006-09-07 21:32:00 Thats what I'd install. gcarmich (10068)
483106 2006-09-07 21:54:00 I have a GA 7N400L and ran into two problems when I tried using 4 sticks of 512 RAM.

One:

You need to use Single Sided RAM in slot 3 & 4 if you want all slots filled. In order from slot 1 to slot 4 the you can only put in 4 sticks of RAM in Dual Channel mode as:

DS/SS DS/SS SS SS

You cannot put in 4 sticks in single channel mode.

This mucked me up for a while.

Secondly, I found out that K7 Triton Boards have to have the RAM timing stepped back to 333 in the bios if more than two sticks are used, or it won't boot.

Both of these issues had me stumped for a while. Ensure two matching sticks are Single Sided, and let me know where you get them from :)

483107 2006-09-08 04:23:00 blaaargghh! seems so complicated! I'll give it a go... it's just that my brother will probably buy the RAM of e-bay in australia for me, because it's cheaper there than here even considering postage costs... so it'll be a hassle if it doesn't work! :yuck: bizzack (7739)
483108 2006-09-08 04:27:00 Jester, do you know if the board can handle 2 sticks of 1gig RAM? as then I would buy two double sided 1gigs,, and two single sided 512mb. Hope it works as I dont wanna blow a heap of money on ram i cant use.

also if I reduce the RAM timing to 333 will the performance drop heaps? is it still worth installing all the ram then? thanks!

483109 2006-09-08 05:40:00 I don't see any reason why you can't use 2 sticks of DS 1 gig ram, the manual says it can take up to 4 gigs sothat's 4 x 1 gig :)

That solution seems the most practical (2 x 1 gig D/S and 2 x 512 S/S) to me.

I would suggest that any drop in performance from 400 to 333 may be helped by more ram in the system, I wouldn't think you'd notice it. Someone here may correct me if I'm wrong of course!!
