483059 2006-09-07 05:30:00 Ok guy’s I need help again .

I’m looking at upgrading from 56k dial-up to 256k, $29 per month, 200meg Broadband from Xtra .

At the moment I have an Xtra (E-Mail) account on which I use about 4hrs per month and a ClearNet account on a $12:95 150hrs plan of which I use about 100hrs of the 150hrs for browsing .

Now I’ve rang Xtra and they tell me that their $29, 200meg plan, is only good for about 2hrs browsing per week and after that I’d probably hit my cap .

To me this means I get 8hrs as opposed to 150hrs and the speed is only 4 times faster?????

Beats me . So can anyone confirm or deny the above and explain to this geriatric how all this works .

At the moment it’s looking like a b awful deal . :(

All advise and suggestions will be gratefully received . ;)

it also depends on how much you want to spend, shop around and see what the best deal is, hopfully when naked dsl kicks in things will be alot beter :)

remember telecom will try and get you with free this and that but NOTHING is ever free!!!

I hope you don't mean that you use trhe xtra account to dialup at $2 . 50 per hour for the email . Just set your xtramail to forward to your Clearnet email address . Yes BB doesn't look good for liught users .

You may have followed a number of similar threads on these forums in the past, and you may have noticed that I fervently recommend Xnet ( . xnet . co . nz/internet/broadband . shtml" target="_blank">www . xnet . co . nz)as an entry-level broadband option . They offer a 256kbps plan for $29 . 95, and you get 1 gig of data instead of 200MB - 5 x the data allowance .

The only downside is that Xnet don't provide you with the "free" broadband modem you get with other providers, but then they don't ask you to sign up to a 12 month contract, either . If you are comfortable with computer hardware, you can purchase your own modem from Dick Smiths ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/en/product/XH1172" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz)or your local computer store - it's relatively easy to set up - in which case I would recommend Xnet without hesitation - you get more for your money, there are no strings attached, and they have a fast, friendly helpdesk, just to mention a few of the benefits .

Regarding how long 200 MB (or 1GB) would last, my experience when I started with Xnet was that unless you spent a lot of time downloading large video files, or streaming video and audio, you would be hard pressed to use up your data allowance . Granted, it's more likely on the Telecom option - it would be less likely on the Xnet option - but if you're just viewing a few pages now and then and downloading your emails, it should last more than 2 hours .

483063 2006-09-07 05:50:00 The barest minimum you might get away with, depending on your browsing habits, would be 1GB per month . It is not how much time you spend online, it is the amount of data you chew through .

If you just browsed PF1 each day and did a bit of emailing you would get away with it but once you start viewing movies or sites with lots of graphics, sending and receiving photos, etc and maybe downloading music then you really start to chew through the data . Downloading Windows updates can also make a bit of a dent in your allowance .

My ADSL plan is discontinued now but I can quite easily manage with my 2GB peak and 2GB off-peak limit and that is with two computers using the internet a lot . A third PC is often hooked up as well to download various updates .

483064 2006-09-07 05:56:00 To be honest, 200Mb is jack all, a waste of time, money and just a large joke.

I would say based on your description, 1Gb would be the MINIUM.

I used to have dial up, then switched to BB with a 10Gb cap and every month I have gone over, but that is because of all the videos and games...

483065 2006-09-07 06:23:00 Having just changed over to the PDQ Clear product I would think that if you continue with your preseent usage habits 1 Gig would be ample. For me I can only get the lowest usage plan due to distance from exchange etc but I get 256 up for $26.95 plus $2.95 for each Gig used per month (no throttles). I've not changed my usage habits and only used 0.60Gig for a months usage.

Wouldn't mind getting a faster connection but I'd only be wasting my money

483066 2006-09-07 06:26:00 To Lizard who recommends Xnet, so do I. We are on a 10 gig a month plan, at $42 a month, and there is one for $29 but can't remember how much download it is, but we have been using it for a couple of months, and no way would I go back to dial up. Thanks for the recommendation Lizard, cos I think it was you who sent me there supergran (108)
483067 2006-09-07 06:42:00 Thanks all, I am getting the picture I think????

Just to help you with my browsing habits, I don’t play online games, download movies or upload more than 10megs per month .

Like most of you I don’t take anything Telecom says at face value, hence this post . :groan:

All my browsing is sites like Press F1 and with Dial-Up the little computers on the bottom quick launch taskbar sit doing nothing most of the time .

I’ve just looked at my inbox and there is a whopping 600 messages taking up 175meg which have taken 4 months to accumulate .

Yes PaulD I’m guilty of paying $2:50hr for E-Mail but I’m going to look into that now . ;)

And yes, I’ll certainly look at Xnet .

483068 2006-09-07 09:13:00 I also recommend Xnet.
The data cap applies to international traffic. NZ sites don't count toward your cap. And if you reach your limit, you can choose to either throttle back to dial-up speed, or pay for overage.
