| 482843 | 2006-09-05 19:07:00 | Hey, I just received my laptop int he mail today and I want to transfer some files from my desktop to my laptop. How do I do this? Can I do it via usb or I have to use my LAN router? Can I just use the ethernet cable that I use from my PC to my router and just use it to connect my PC to Laptop? I took out the cable plugged into my router that goes to my PC and connected it to my Laptop, but they didn't seem to connect for some reason. |

| 482844 | 2006-09-05 19:42:00 | Hi. You're most likely gonna have to go and get another standard Ethernet cable and use it with your LAN router. I have seen USB cables that connect 2 computers advertised on a website, however they were overly expensive ($38 for two metres!!!:eek: ) so I didn't get them. PS:Plugging your Ethernet cable from your computer into your laptop won't work. If you want to use a direct connection over Ethernet, you have to get a Crossover Ethernet Cable, which allows you to connect two computers together but cannot do the same job that ordinary Ethernet cables do. |

If you want to use a direct connection over Ethernet, you have to get a Crossover Ethernet Cable, which allows you to connect two computers together but cannot do the same job that ordinary Ethernet cables do. Actually as long as the computers a relatively new it wont make a lick of difference whether it is a patch or crossover cable as modern network cards are able to sense this and adjust accordingly I suspect your problem would have been a lack of network settings. make sure both computers have and ip adderess that is the same bar the last numbers after the '.' an have the same 'subnet mask' |

He means enter a number such as 192.168.1.2 for one computer and 192.168.1.3 for the next and 192.168.1.4 for the next, and so on. These numbers are entered in the Local Area Connection Properties under Internet Protocol's properties. See the Networking Computers FAQs on this page (faqf1.net.nz) for more information. |

The first 10 minutes or so I was getting 20000 kbs per second, then it dropped to about 10,000 and started to average around 5,000. I thought my cord had been overheated a little so I unplugged it and let it rest for a while. I used it again and was getting about 11-12k tops. |

| 482852 | 2006-09-07 12:03:00 | I have my cable connected to both computers permanently. Have had no problems at all at anytime with speed or any thing else. If you have the DSE unit make sure your cable is plugged into a self powered USB Hub. I have set my computers up with a shortcut in each Quick Launch Bar and just simply click these when I need to transfer between the laptop and the desktop. Hope this helps. BURNZEE |
