482530 2006-09-04 10:48:00 I have a dilemma,
recently I have been offered a brand new system for under $1000.00

17" LCD monitor (which I'll sell),
leaving..
Compaq Presario SR1765AN AM64 3400 (2.2ghz) desktop PC with...
ATI RS482/SB400 chipset
MSI MS-7184 (AmethystM-GL6E) motherboard
200GB HD,
ATI RADEON X1300PRO video card,

I've currently got a...
p4 3.2 desktop,
ASUS P4P800SE motherboard
ATI RADEON 9600XT Video Card
2 GB RAM
Soundblaster Live! Platinum frontpanel-mount soundcard
2 x 80GB HD's.

The hungriest app I use is BF2 which my system will dump about 1 in every 10 instances of running.
I plan to cannibalise the RAM & 1 HD from the P4 system and drop it into the Compaq system. Thing is I can't get a clear answer as to if the AMD system is better?

482531 2006-09-04 13:19:00 I think the AMD chip is better
Reckon you should buy it cannabilize it make one great machine from the best parts and hoc of the rest as a system.

482532 2006-09-04 13:23:00 Meh, The 3400 is a better cpu, but the motherboard looks crap, I wouldn't pay a grand for her.3 or 400 perhaps, but no.....

Never seen a Compaq yet that I would want to own.

Imo you will be wasting your money, spend a grand on good parts instead.

482533 2006-09-04 22:53:00 You'd be better off spending some of that grand on upgrading your video card. Like Metla said the 3400+ is a better CPU but you'd hardly notice the difference. Pete O'Neil (6584)
482534 2006-09-04 23:52:00 2nd that too. Your system lacks a decent video card, thats all! SolMiester (139)
482535 2006-09-05 06:19:00 Thanks for the advice. I talked to a dealer who sells presario's and he said this one is fairly crappy.
I like ATI video cards, any suggestions for an upgrade?

482536 2006-09-06 03:07:00 get it, sell the video cards and buy a 7600GS or, since you prefer ati, try a x1600XT 256MB. eitherway they are both roughly $200-300 and offer great performance.

i couldnt agree more

If you feel like spending more you could always go for the the 7600GT for $300-$400 or the X1800GTO for $400-500 or the 7900GT for $500-600

eitherway youll be able to play bf2 at max details with a fair ammount of filtering enabled and at a decent resolution.

Oh and before i forget, keep the athlon
