483562 2006-09-09 20:16:00 Hi everybody,

My Maxtor HDD is dying. We are 4 on this PC and I had a password on my user - we have Windows XP home edition.
I tried to "repair" the HDD with Norton System Works and tried also to search for viruses with Norton Antivirus.
Everything was clear when I received message “Imminent failure of HDD" when I opened the PC.
The problem is that I recuperated all files for the other users but in my case it seems to be impossible. I see all folders but when I try to copy files I have a message like "Access denied or wrong password".

Can someone help me, pls?

Thanks!

483563 2006-09-09 20:21:00 that 'imminent failure' message really means exactly that.......you should stop using that hdd immediately and get another one.......then use norton ghost, which you should have on 'system works' to image the dying hdd to the new one..... drcspy (146)
483564 2006-09-09 22:26:00 I don't have Ghost with my Norton SystemWorks 2005. When I try to copy a folder I have an error "Cannot copy oWindowsUpdate[2]: acces is denied." Michelinos (11119)
483565 2006-09-09 22:32:00 Just buy another hdd and reinstall Windows. Speedy Gonzales (78)
483566 2006-09-09 22:52:00 I am on another PC. I connected the HDD and I'm trying to take out my files. Michelinos (11119)
483567 2006-09-09 22:59:00 Not quite what I meant. I meant put a BRAND new one in yours and then format / reinstall XP on it.

Try this (support.microsoft.com)

Or this (support.microsoft.com)

If the PC you're on has XP / 2K on it..

483568 2006-09-09 23:21:00 Thanks Speedy,

I have XP Home edition.
But I don't have a "Security" tab in the folder properties.
And I can't find a "Use simple sharing" in Tools/Folder options/view
I am Administrator on this PC too.

483569 2006-09-09 23:25:00 Its the last option under tools/folder options/view.

And u wont get security options unless simple file sharing is unticked.

And if the hdd has been formatted in NTFS.

483570 2006-09-09 23:32:00 I swear to God: "use simple sharing" is not there! Michelinos (11119)
483571 2006-09-09 23:34:00 So, if HDD is NTFS I can't do anything?
Because it is NTFS.
