483967 2006-09-11 11:59:00 I was away from the computer for a short while, and when I returned it had rebooted itself. never seen this before.

I checked the Event Viewer, and found this error reported:

The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Reboot the machine.

Tried to find more info at Microsoft without success.

Anyone have any clues what could cause this?

Running XP Pro SP1

483968 2006-09-11 14:25:00 You probally have the blaster worm or similar.

Update to SP2.

483969 2006-09-11 15:24:00 Update to SP2.Thx for the suggestion Rob. But not in this lifetime. Greg (193)
483970 2006-09-11 20:39:00 Considering Microsoft will give the boot to SP1ers, it is the best suggestion so far, and probably will be. pcuser42 (130)
483971 2006-09-11 20:57:00 Considering Microsoft will give the boot to SP1ers,

Meaning? All SP1 WinXPs will suddenly self-destruct?

And having a worm means you apply a SP and then its all better? Run some anti-malware programs.

483972 2006-09-11 21:34:00 Well.. if this was a oncer just ignore... if this keeps happening you need at least one patch from MS, you will also need to remove the worm/?? first. Rob99 (151)
483973 2006-09-11 22:24:00 Unsure why you're convinced it's a worm or something. Anti-virus scan comes up clean. Hijackthis came up clean (more about that in another thread).

And yeah it's only happened once, so if it occurs again I'll delve into it a bit more.

Cheers

483974 2006-09-12 02:27:00 Unsure why you're convinced it's a worm or something.I'm not convinced, but your symptoms sounds exactly like the blaster worm, except yours has only rebooted once. Rob99 (151)
