2006-09-11 07:56:00 G'day all. I have just powered up a computer that I put together. It has a SATA 160g seagate HD and it is not being recognised or found even in the BIOS.And just to make things interesting I am going to install Ubuntu and not windows, which is where I am having the problem because I can't instal it if it can't find the hard drive.Cheers for any help. joemac (9739)
2006-09-11 08:03:00 Stupid questions, but often fixes the problem!!

Did you plug the power and data cables in? are they loose? is the drive set to SATA I (not II) if your motherboard can only run SATA I?

2006-09-11 10:24:00 how do I set it to sata one? Its a new mobo (asus A8V-MX) and the HD is plugged into the number two sata slot(of four) I will try it in one and see what happens. When I started it up for the first time it wouldn't go until i realised that I had the power button lead in the wrong place so I will check all that again. joemac (9739)
2006-09-11 10:37:00 Okay, tried moving the leads around to no avail. joemac (9739)
2006-09-11 11:08:00 I just looked at the specs and it is SATA II so you don't need to worry about jumper settings.

Does the drive actually spin up? can you hear ir?

2006-09-11 11:46:00 that is a good question because I can't fin d anything at all ao the bios setup except for a mention in the boot order list joemac (9739)
2006-09-12 04:35:00 Ok I have just replaced the power cable to the HD and it is now showing in the BIOS but it is not being detected by either Ubuntu or BartPE:badpc: joemac (9739)
2006-09-12 06:34:00 If you put in just a normal Windows CD does it come up then? The_End_Of_Reality (334)
2006-09-12 06:46:00 I don't have one. Could I make one from my other computer? how? Is there any way I can connect my laptop up to it and try something (I don't know what?) joemac (9739)
