483863 2006-09-11 02:45:00 The time varies but after a couple of minutes to a few minutes the pc will lock up and the pc speaker starts making an alarm sound... the cpu temp sits on about 45'C so i'm assuming its not an over heating problem?

i was looking in the bios for a while and saw the boot sector virus protection is on, could it be that? say it is, how can i get rid of the virus, if it as a virus? a normal virus scan ? it also locked up and did the same thing when i was browsing through the bios..
any thoughts? the pc is pretty much un-usable because it keeps locking up..

cheers

483864 2006-09-11 03:20:00 Boot sector virus protection being "on" is simply telling you that it's set to enable protecting the boot sector from being infected - the opposite of what you are suggesting. Its not a virus and does not need "fixing"

The siren sound certainly indicates a failed fan or overheating problem. Take the side off and check.

You cannot always trust any indicated temperature, it all depends where it's being measured.

483865 2006-09-11 04:05:00 thanks for ur input godfather,
the fan is working fine, there was a bit of dust clogging up the heat sync so i removed the fan and cleaned it out, now the fan funs smoother too.

i forgot to mention that i got a blue screen once saying windows has been halted due to something trying to write to the rom. i can't quite remember but if it happens again i'll post what it says.

483866 2006-09-11 06:14:00 whats the case temps? tweak'e (69)
483867 2006-09-11 06:23:00 dust in the heat sink will certainly reduce the efficiency of it to the point where it wont even be of use..........so cleaning it was obviouosly a good idea.....anohter thing to check....look thru the bios for settings to do with alarms and temperatures.......or shutdowns and temps.... drcspy (146)
483868 2006-09-11 22:14:00 the temps are
MB temp sits about 34'C
CPU temo sits about 45'C
fan speed about 5000RPM

Its an asus A7N266-VM board
in the hardware monitor in bios, it shows the cpu temps and voltages, you can't change the threshold u can just choose ignore.

483869 2006-09-12 02:06:00 i think the hard drive maye be cooked, it wont load all the way into windows, i've also tried it on another computer and it freezes in the same place, it's also really hot when i touch it. i've made a backup copy so i'll ghost that onto a new hdd and see how it goes Jimmy D (2061)

case temp is way to hot for a pc at idle (assuming the readings are roughly rifght and your not sighting in front of the fire!). this can cause hardrive failure as they over heat.

483871 2006-09-12 07:34:00 o ok. how can i make it cooler, install some fans in the case? because at the moment there is only the cpu fan. also my computer at home is running:

Temperatures
Motherboard 33 °C (91 °F)
CPU 55 °C (131 °F)
Aux 39 °C (102 °F)

Cooling Fans
CPU 4821 RPM

is that way too hot?
i think i should buy some extra fans...
whats the aux reading?
Jimmy D (2061)
483872 2006-09-12 08:17:00 aux reading is often a non existing sensor or sometimes a hardrive/graphics card sensor .

case temps should be withen 5 degrees of room temp . with the system running flat out case temp should still be under 40 degrees MAX . hardrives want to be under 50 MAX .

this time of year i would exspect the case temp to be well under 30 degrees at all times (unless you have the fire roaring!) what people tend to forget is everthiing in the pc is reliant on the case temp for cooling, HD, CDwriters, motherboard, ram, video cards, tv cards etc .

you should have case fans and most importantly put some THOUGHT into the cooling design . i've seen so many pc's with fans running backwoulds!
