483904 2006-09-12 02:38:00 As I stated earlier "the biggest drawback with linux is the number of good distros available" For a newbee with very limited resources linux is the only way to go
(try running XP on a p2 with even a gb of ram on a paperboys income)
There are a lot of "paperboys" out there. But I have to admit it is best not to try windoze first.

483905 2006-09-12 07:25:00 You are way short on ram for any normal distro. If you don't want to run a gui you would likely get away with 48MB, but you really need 128MB minimum for a GUI and 256MB is great. Damn Small is a good option or Vector Linux runs very well on low spec hardware. Can you manage to get another 64MB chip of memory.

Xandros would run like a dog on a PII with 48MB of RAM if it would even install.

483906 2006-09-12 08:14:00 Thanks for all your replies, I did not really have much hope with 48Mb but that is all the spare PC can take or so I am told. I will have a look at what you have all suggested. I appreciate all the advice, thanks once again.
