483724 2006-09-10 23:58:00 You planning on overclocking? vader (11117)
483725 2006-09-11 00:35:00 If you like Intel, E6400's go for around $420 and mobo's anywhere from $150-$400. AMD X2 2.2GHz 4400's go for $440-$460 depending on whether you want a 939 or AM2 socket, and mobo's for similar to the intels.
Some $300 2x1GB DDRII667 RAM (CL5 though) is here - supercheappc.biz
Here's a nice comparison chart for your graphics card - www23.tomshardware.com

Personally I'd go for the Intel as most reports say they tend to best AMD in the overclocking arena.

Good Luck

483726 2006-09-11 02:03:00 Sorry to tack my stuff onto this thread, but I am looking for about the same thing (pc at $1500), so whatever I say might also be useful for bizzack.

Specs (using QMB to get these):

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket AM2
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB 7200RPM SATA II 8MB NCQ 3Gb/s HDD
Genius EasyTouch Optical II Multimedia Keyboard + Optical Mouse Kit PS2 Black
Corsair XMS 2 x 512Mb DDR2-667 XMS2-5400 2x64Mx64non-ECC 2x240 DIMM, unbuffered, 4-4-4-12, 32Mx8 DRAMs
AOC 19" CRT Monitor (Beige), True Flat 0.25mm, up to 1600X1200
Asus M2V-TVM Support AMD Socket AM2 Athlon 64 CPU ATX VIA K8T890 Chipset DDR2
LiteON SHW-1635S 16x DVD-R/+R
Logitech R-20 2.
ASUS Extreme N7300GT SILENT/HTD/256MB

My problem is the case/psu... I want it cheap, but psu's are important right?

Is this case/psu any good quality wise? www.qmb.co.nz

Also... that AOC monitor. Would there be much of a visible quality difference between that and a philips 19" ? Just wondering if its better to get the philips.

483727 2006-09-11 04:56:00 Gigabtye make some really good motherboards for a good price, if your on a budget probably best to stay away from ASUS they make good boards but you pay top dollar for them.

256mb on a 7300GT is way overkill, save some money and get one with 128mb. Consider making the jump to a 7600GT, especially if you want to game, 7300GT's arent that great.

The 3600+ X2's are pretty cheap and will overclock well, otherwise any low end Athlon offer solid value. AM2 is just as cheap as 929 so dont waste your time with socket 939.

Corsair XMS memory shouldnt really be considered on your budget, generic brands such as Transcend, Samsung, Twinmos are all fine, just dont expect awesome overclocks or tight timings.

Perhaps consider picking up a cheap case of TradeMe and then put a 400w Enermex in it, i brought a brand new cheapo case the other day off TradeMe for $25. A lil flimsy but otherwise a pretty good buy, ive definately seen alot worse.

483728 2006-09-11 05:01:00 How about this for your case jobloggs? www.cbcnz.com
Or this? - www.cbcnz.com
Or a $50 case with 400Watts here - www.elive.co.nz

All have 400Watt PSU's, one comes with Keyboard and Mouse and the first two have side ventilation with fans to keep that 7300GT cool (or whatever you decide to get)

483729 2006-09-11 05:27:00 Wow! I just checked out that QMB site and it has PSU/Case's galore!! Personally I wouldn't go with anything under a 400Watt PSU. You may want to check out how many molex plugs they have available as well, cos' if you want to run a couple of CD or DVD drives and a couple of HDD's you still need one for your graphics card and may need a couple more for fans if your case gets quite hot.

This is cheap - www.qmb.co.nz
These look nice - www.qmb.co.nz

Too many choices!

483730 2006-09-11 05:53:00 Yeah, but I am more concerned about the quality of the psu. I heard somewhere to only ever bother buying really good brands such as enermax, and a few others I can't remember.

The 256mb 7300GT was actually a pretty decent price I thought. (Not that I am all wise and knowledgable about this stuff)

I'm not looking to overclock either. Just trying to replace a 5 year old pc with something that runs better. For now, the only games on it will be stuff like Sims... but I guess later any other game could come on. Not looking to play them with fantastic graphics. Min graphics is fine. Should I go for something cheaper like a 7300GS ?

483731 2006-09-11 06:09:00 Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G $165.26
AMD Athlon64 X2 3600+ $263.33
1GB DDR2-667 $217.52
ASUS 7300GT $187.38
Enermex Noisetaker 420w $142.57

Something like the above would be a good start, drop it in a cheap case with your choice of harddrive and optical drive and it would come close to the $1500. If you want something better for gaming upgrade the video card and possibly double the memory.

Another option would be to buy a Conroe ready motherboard and a cheap Pentium Dual Core, then wait till next year for the cheap Core 2 Duos or Conroe based Celerons to come out and replace the CPU then. Granted the Pentiums run a bit hotter, but with there recent price drop they offer really good value.

Vader the PSU's provided in cheap cases are often crap, there is a considerable difference between a quality 400w PSU and a cheap one. Anyone who buys there PSU purely based on wattage is an idiot.

483732 2006-09-11 10:52:00 Gee thanks Pete. I was just throwing out some cheap options dude - he said he wanted it cheap. If you want quality, you must spend cash. Just cos' I'm new here... come on, I was only trying to help.

Oh yeah and I stand by my statement, I wouldn't go for lower than a 400Watt. Anything else is just gonna cause you problems in the future. These things degrade over time, so as you say, quality is - as with most things - very important, but if you don't have the power to do what you want... Just a good idea to build a little redundancy into your system.
