484841 2006-09-14 22:41:00 Just wondering if anyone else is having a problem with Ihug. Since moving to them from Xtra my bittorrents are incredibly slow (1-10KB/s) and I know this is random but even speeds from private trackers that would normally (on Xtra anyhow) be firing in. I am using the same router with the ports all forwarded as you would expect.

The thing that makes me wonder is that once I open my bittorrent client my surfing becomes a crawl. I test the speed through Ihug or other NZ sites and I basically get around the 3MB/s mark (and again I know this is always accurate, but I reguarly get this) yet as soon as I turn on ABC my speeds become a woeful 0.5MB/s. Again this did not happen with Xtra.

Whats the go you reckon?

PS, just incase this could be a router issue I am currently waiting for a new one from Ihug.

Oh, and I found this: www.gpforums.co.nz
from many other ihug customers with similar reports but they're not accepting any more posts.

just got this from ihug:
Also, a possibility of our upstream provider which may be causing
congestion. Do a tracert to the IP which you are downloading from and get back to us
on which upstream provider you are using with that certain IP.

not quite sure how to do that....

484843 2006-09-15 05:27:00 Yea I was wondering why VOIP every now and again was cutting me off, I did a speed test and download is fine - 3586 there abouts , but upload has dropped to around 408 - 412 where on average i was getting a over 500 up most around 508 upload. explains why now.

as for bitttorent. i use utorrent, opend up a port and downloaded 2 last night same time at speeds of around 80kb and 36kb , that seemed fine to me, i dont know what ABC is like. might want to give utorrent a try , it might work better for you buff or might not, just a thought.

484844 2006-09-15 05:34:00 Being discussed on nz.comp newsgroup. Seems they are doing something wierd with the traffic shaping, to the point of blocking ports nearly completely. Try a port number < 1024... gibler (49)
484845 2006-09-16 07:38:00 Ok, I've given Utorrent a go, and theres a minimal increase in speed, hovering around 5KB/s, but this is stuff that I know should be coming down a lot lot faster than that.

Aaarrgghhh, its doing my head in.

I also tried using a port lower than 1024, same deal it seems.

As soon as I click on my bit torrent program my surfing times out. It's like Ihug are sucking my will to live.

Anyhow, I'l wait till I get my new router, hopefully that will do the trick.

Thanks for your help. How do I get to that NZ comp newsgroup? Do I use something like mozilla thunderbird?

There seems to be a LOT of Ihug customers complaining about torrent speeds at the moment . I though most were just using crap public trackers (and most probably are) .

Then there seems to be the odd person like yourself that uses previously good private trackers . There is some talk about certain trackers upstream being limited by there providers, and in one forum, Ihug replied to a user stateing this .

I still have two work mates on Ihug downloading often at 300KB/s+ on private trackers, so this is a mystery .

I suggest try port 4000 (what one of them uses) with utorrent, also try to get on a few more private trackers to test .

Changing your torrent client won't help much .

484848 2006-09-17 01:51:00  I got the same problem too ever since I've changed my internet plan. I can't hit 600MB in 12hrs. Like it usually do.
They said they don't block ports but I know it's Ihug fault. I'm using Azureus to download Windows Vista Beta 2[Because I've missed from Microsoft] and the maximum speed for the offpeak download time is 6.0kbps-8.0kbps. Normally on 2Mbit plan I can download at more than 10.0kbps-100kbps. Imagine how fast it is in the old times. In the peak time the Azureus is about 30.0kbps maximum. BUT I'm gonna change it soon after 1 year contract is finished.
Does quicksilver do this type of things? Or only Ihug?
Another thing can anyone recommend me another port for Azureus?

  And another thing Ihug phone operator is a big fat liar!!!! Hate them now!!! :angry They should said they block ports and blah blah blah but NO!!! :annoyed: What's the point of having 30GB allowance doing nothing?

484849 2006-09-17 05:46:00 It seems that you can't use a same port forever, but must change it every few hours to achieve high speed downloads from p2p. Ihug will notice it if you use the same port for hours.
:) I got high speed downloads by doing that. The allowance is 30GB how am I going to make full use of that?

484850 2006-09-17 11:47:00 I was using port 23, last time I looked with Ihug, for my bitorrenting... gibler (49)
