484415 2006-09-13 21:19:00 Hi All,

Having joined the xbox360 gang, I am now in the market for a new HD TV.

After some recommendations on makes and models, and also is the step to HDTV really that noticeable in general game play...

Basically, im looking for the cheapest option in terms of HDTV as the xbox itself has already emptyed the pockets!

Cheers

484416 2006-09-13 22:03:00 Hmm to be honest I can't exactly say how much of a difference it'll make, as I more than happily play along using RCA with my Xbox and 29 inch CRT (no problems with the Xbox, although I'd love to grab a Plasma and a component adaptor). Not really an early adopter for good reasons but I will get a 360, soon.

From all the knowledge that I've gathered (which is a fair bit) it seems HDTV does make a noticeable difference. Whether the difference makes up for the cost or not is a whole different story.

Also with the 360 still being in its early stages it's hard to estimate how much better the games will look. Seeing Dead or Alive 4, it didn't seem too much of a huge improvement over DOA Ultimate on Xbox. However with time I'm sure that the gaming experience difference between standard and HDTV will become larger.

Overall, hold off until Halo 3! :) But seeing as you've gone through the trouble of getting a 360 already, a LCD TV may be a good addition (and they're all HD) so take a look here for a whole list of prices:

484417 2006-09-14 21:26:00 I was under the impression that the majority of current LCD tellys have a refresh rate of 8ms. This apparantly, is too slow for the xbox360 and may results in some blurred images... Is this correct? Veale (536)
484418 2006-09-14 23:10:00 the majority of the major brand lcd and plasma tv advertise HD ready. My understanding of it is that it will show a hd signal in hd, but the tuners in them aren't hd.
A bit like the av stereo tv's and the stero tv's of older years.

I do stand to be corrected

You would be better staying with a standard 29" CRT TV. Anything less that 40" is not worth it for HDTV

484421 2006-09-19 09:46:00 Dick Smith are selling decent acer LCD TVs.. eg www.dse.co.nz
Native resolution of 1280x768 so supports 720p HD.
Has component input for xbox 360 and DVI-D or VGA for PC etc.
Can buy HDMI to DVI-D adaptors if you want to connect sony gear to it.
Contrast ratio is slightly low compared to some brands but I've found my 26" one to be just fine.
