1407017 2015-08-19 01:47:00 So I am heading into a new upgrade and have a question or two.

RAM

I have heard that Corsair and Mushkin among others is "generic" and brands like G-Skill are not.
I have also heard that generic is not a good choice.

Can anyone shed light on this, I have no issue paying for the better options.

1407018 2015-08-19 02:08:00 generic = unbranded
Corsair is a brand, so be definition cant be generic.

Possibly all cheaper RAM is more or less just generic with a brand sticker on them
The ram will be made for them, by another factory .

What is the best brand these days?

I hope not, I really do want to know if there is a best brand and if so what it is.

1407022 2015-08-19 02:32:00 I would rather stick with ram thats supported on whatever mobo site Speedy Gonzales (78)
1407023 2015-08-19 02:32:00 They are all pretty good, shop for specs and warranty mainly.
The best possible RAM of course is the stuff that's on the motherboard manufacturers certified list but unfortunately choices here in NZ tend to be a little limited and often you have to pick something else.

1407025 2015-08-19 02:58:00 Go to the Kingston website, they have a wizard to pick out your RAM.
I guess if youre looking at that $900 motherboard, then perhaps spend the extra $$ on Kingston or Crucial RAM.
Kingston isnt that more expensive for their run of the mill stuff .

Do you really need a $900 motherboard, could those $ be better spent on other components ?
(in 3 years it will only be worth bugger all)

This. Buy a 200-300 board...and then another 200-300 one in a year or two when a whole new faster chipset comes out. Seems a ridiculous amount on money to spend on one component. Especially if to drive it properly (ie at full speed) you'd probably also need 1 - 2 $500+ video cards.
