1397521 2015-03-28 08:34:00 Here is a good article on why pirating will still happen:

www.nzherald.co.nz

"I don't want to catch up on Agents of Shield on OnDemand on a laptop, then switch on the Playstation 4 to watch the new episode of Better Call Saul using the Lightbox app, then swap to the iPad, fire up the Netflix app, send it to the Apple TV and binge-watch Orange is the New Black.

Just re-read that sentence. It's ridiculous. That's an average night's viewing with about 20 minutes of mucking around with devices. When did something as simple as watching television get so complicated?"

1397522 2015-03-28 17:45:00 The simplest thing on television would be a close fought race between the elegance and the dulcet tones of Suzanne Paul, and the IQ of the station executives.
A fairly trivial contest, they would probably make it into a series, with clones on all channels.

1397525 2015-03-28 19:37:00 I don't want to scroll through thousands of listings to find stuff.
I don't really want to stream or download it.

I see a lot about what fiction programs are on all these offerings but never anything about what we watch - docos.

1397527 2015-03-28 21:26:00 The article makes some good points but like a lot of similar arguments ignores the "I don't want to pay for it" part of the argument and pretends that's not a large part of the motivation. Even if someone did offer all the things us pirates claim to want in one simple service a lot of people would continue to pirate shows because it's free. Also his example is a poor one that exaggerates the issue, the laptop he started out on can watch all those services with no device switching required, as can the PS4, and the iPad. The argument is better if you don't invent extra reasons.

I'm not saying I don't pirate TV shows, I do. I just think most people publicly arguing for piracy are a little dishonest in their arguments. I'm currently using lightbox free for a year and quite like it, just started Netflix and quite like that too and might pay for it while lightbox is free. That gives me a year to choose which is better but even if I paid for both it's still cheaper than sky and has more content for me personally. A lot of the shows I've downloaded are on these two services and I could see myself "going legit" if they get more up to date (some shows are a season or two behind). I've already stopped downloading Vikings and just watch it on lightbox on the PS3.

If these services get good enough it'll probably end my pirating ways, but it won't stop piracy in general and not every pirate will switch or even truly wants to. Here's an older amusing take on why piracy is better than buying movies you may have seen before boingboing.net
