1397493 2015-03-29 05:24:00 Interesting - looking at the stats for the previous election NZ First almost punched Labour into 3rd place, so Labour may have saved themselves further embarrasment by 'gifting' NZF their Labour voters. If they'd tried to compete they'd have probably had an even more embarrasing result, being pile-driven into an almost invisible 3rd spot.

But certainly the #1 message from it all is a serious slap in the face to National, coz a lot of Nat voters have jumped to NZF as well.

An earlier comment in the thread about the poor state of provincial Northland is very, very true.
There are many, particularly up towards Rawene / Opononi who cope without electricity, using candles at night.

Houses can look like abandoned shacks, and the farmland seems to be for grazing rusty car wrecks. Seems to work though, because the wrecks keep multiplying.
Might even be enviro frienldly grazing, as whatever 'deposits' these cars make into the soil seem to really encourage the grass to grow, coz all the wrecks are surrounded by long, long grass.

Education standards can be pretty scary too. Some of the folks seem barely above a feral status. There's even tales of kids who've never travelled as far as Auckland and seen real city.

Surely giving more money would help them into the 21'st century.

More money as a handout - No please.

More money into education and health? Yes please.

Some months back I was working with a kid from the middle of nowhere in the far north west. I google mapped his home address - it's an area where the roads don't even have names. Chances are the family letterbox is 5km further up the track, back on a road that is good for wheeled transport instead of horseback. He could barely communicate in English.

I imagine he's quite good with Kohanga Reo, and at playing touch rugby, and riding a horse bareback, but I do feel the need to question whether that is going to help his job chances when he can't understand "Put that Watties box into aisle 3 please", or to open a bank account for himself when the forms (in English) are asking for 2 forms of ID, a utility bill, birth cert or passport.

Chances are he's never witnessed the internet, and if he has, it certainly wasn't within 10km of his home.
And just how much of the internet is of use to a kid who can only read Te Reo?

He'll only learn what his parents can teach him... how to drive, how to ride a horse, how to farm (maybe).
He's probably the most deprived kid I've ever met. And purely a victim of his location.

His dad wasn't sure how to spell his name.

1397495 2015-03-29 18:47:00 Lack of fine motor skills required to carry out this task shows a severe lack of ability which every adult should have.

Also shows an inability to emphasize with most/all manual workers in the country which I think is demonstrably the case with our leader, key (lack of capitalization deliberate).
Really? I think it just shows he's never done much maintenance work in his life. Well, of course not, his job was playing with money not building things.

Can't help thinking that more money would do the trick and maybe more haka practice.

I was being sarcastic, you can have all the money in the world, but if you have no aspirations you are going nowhere.

Ngapuhi, in Northland, haven't got any yet. They are still arguing amongst themselves who is to represent them in negotiations with the Government. Their settlement is expected to be of the same magnitude as Ngai Tahu and Tainui, but while they stuff around, trying to organise who will be the representatives (with attendant benefits of course) the normal people suffer. There is no reason to expect that Ngapuhi will thrive any less than others once they have settled, but their problem seems to be getting organised. Northland will be a more prosperous place for them once they do, provided investments are made wisely, and with the intention of benefitting Ngapuhi people.

Thanks for that Rich.
