Chronological age of the amp is not really an issue, I have a range of amps of various ages, their specs were good at the time of acquisition, and I have no reason to believe that they are not still doing the job today.I've since discovered that what you say about the speakers is quite correct - we were badly advised when we built the house. I'm sure that is one reason why I find I need to use the headphones. There is nothing wrong with the Kenwood system except, as I said, the lack of modern connections. It has done us very well over the years.

1396975 2015-03-26 08:20:00 Probably with your Kenwood you lack the Centre speaker Channel as it is not Home Theatre

Maybe one of those Samsung systems with the Tall Boy speakers (Wireless Rears),most now have even ipod connectivity and you can pick these up on TM used at a good price

Plenty of options out there

1396977 2015-03-26 08:45:00 I've got conventional wired speakers, have seen a system with wireless rears ,the sender is plugged into power for the rears

The more you spend the better system you get they say (I wish)

1396978 2015-03-26 08:57:00 The more you spend the better system you get they say (I wish)That's something I have to be careful of. My hearing is iffy and I really only watch TV and listen to radio, so I don't want/need to overspec the sound system. Tony (4941)
1396979 2015-03-27 08:21:00 I've taken the first step. Got a Bose Solo system like this (www.jbhifi.co.nz) one from JB HiFi.

Sounded great in the shop, but will it be the same at home? Watch this space. Still looking for a TV.

1396982 2015-03-27 23:26:00 I have a Veon warehouse TV, picture is great, I run it through my 12 year old Marantz Hifi amp coupled to a pair of Mission M75's, sounds fantastic. gary67 (56)
1396983 2015-03-28 10:31:00 Jeez! I don't mean to rain on your parade Tony, but for an indecisive guy with iffy hearing, and especially one who did not want to overspec his sound system, you sure did pull a blinder. Bose is top-end and unless you have crystal ears, simply not worth the money they ask.

I have a couple of pairs of 12x12x18cm high Sonovox speakers in heavy aluminium enclosures that I use for my downstairs hi fi, and also for occasional portable use, and they can take anything my amp throws at them, which is way more volume than Mrs T can cope with. When I bought them several years ago they were very inexpensive, hence my purchase of two pairs, and I had no trouble explaining my double purchase to Mrs T, so they must have been cheap!

At present the second pair are attached to a small Sanyo portable stereo tape/radio in the man-shed while I complete a repair to the resident Onkyo stereo tuner-amp. The in-built speakers are puny, but the add-ons produce amazing sound levels and quality, so much so that I've been in no great hurry to complete the repair. When I have, they'll be connected to the MS TV instead.

Cheers
