1397531 2015-03-30 10:32:00 They need to consolidate all their shows in one internet media channel (filipekblad.se)..

..to ease up the lives of hackers.

1397532 2015-03-31 00:30:00 Also his example is a poor one that exaggerates the issue, the laptop he started out on can watch all those services with no device switching required, as can the PS4, and the iPad. The argument is better if you don't invent extra reasons.

That's great if you wanna watch them all on a laptop, all the time. I don't.
I wanna watch them on my Chromecast, controlled through my Cellphone. I can do it with Plex, I can do it with YouTube. I can do it with Netflix. I can't do it with TVNZ OnDemand or the likes. Last I checked I couldn't for Lightbox, Quickflix or Neon either.

Immediately rules them out for me.

I would / do happily pay for something, but here's my barrier of entry:
- I want to watch it promptly, I don't want it to be weeks / months behind the rest of the world. If somebody mentions Game of Thrones on G+ and you've not watched the Red Wedding episode, you're gonna be furious.
- I want the quality to be good. Quickflix was abysmal quality when it came out, like my 10yr old DVDRips to 700MB h.263 files were better. 720p at a decent bitrate or just don't bother.
- I want it to be convenient. Play it on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromecast, Android, iPhone... If I can't use my Linux laptop to play it back when I'm sitting in bed and wifey is still awake, I'm gonna get it from somewhere that *will* let me
- I don't mind paying. Hell I'd not think twice about paying double what I'm paying for Netflix if it was one place I could go for everything. Maybe even triple, or quadruple what I'm paying... It'd still be cheaper than SkyTV + Movies!

Price is not the issue for me, it is 100% a convenience issue. From my phone I can fire up any torrent website and have it save the torrent to my fileserver. From there, Plex will play anywhere. Windows, Linux, Mac, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromecast, AppleTV, Xbox360, anything! (Most of those I don't have, but still...)
My time is more valuable to me when I'm trying to relax than a couple of bucks a month. Given there's hundreds of thousands of people in NZ with SkyTV who pay a premium for their TV / Movies for whatever reason, I think it's safe to say people ARE willing to pay.

1397533 2015-03-31 01:16:00 That's all valid and specific to you and others like you, they'll never please everyone. The point of the quote you linked was the article made it seem like you had to switch devices for each service when in fact all 3 devices mentioned can do all 3 services mentioned so the switching and the wasted "20" mins" were not realistic.

I'm not trying to argue there are not good arguments for piracy, just pointing out that many people unlike yourself simply don't want to pay and make all kinds of excuses to avoid saying that they prefer to steal something.

I'm guilty of the same things myself, and convenience is definitely a big factor in it. I would also pay for a service instead if one existed. You must realise though that many pirates, maybe even most, will say the same thing but don't really mean it as anything more than a justification for their actions.

You mention Linux, I'm finding that to be the most problematic myself. I have Linux MINT with mate running on a desktop machine and I can't get either lightbox to work or Audio over HDMI despite many frustrating hours trying. I installed pipelight and it seems to work right up until the video starts to play and then fails with an error and it took a lot of work to get it that far. XP home on the same machine does both perfectly with very little effort. Linux is still not mainstream enough for most streaming services to care about and is probably not a great choice for anyone but a dedicated linux fan for that purpose.

1397534 2015-03-31 01:26:00 It is easy to let sanctimony creep in I note. Cicero (40)
1397535 2015-03-31 02:38:00 Admittedly I didn't read the article, but how long on average would it take to "pirate" each of those mentioned programs compared to streaming them on a different device? the_bogan (9949)
1397536 2015-03-31 02:56:00 Not long, on a decent connection a TV show can be downloaded in 5-15 minutes easily. Once the first show is completed downloading and you start watching it you would expect the other 2 to be completed before you finish watching the first. A real problem facing content providers in my opinion is piracy is actually far easier and more convenient than any of their offerings.

There's even a site I won't name that is much like netflix to use complete with movie posters, descriptions of the show, a search function etc, that will stream directly from torrents and delete them off your system once completed giving you a very netflix like experience that is in many ways superior. If you use a service like that you don't need to download the shows first but can just stream them providing there are enough seeds to provide sufficient download speed.

Quickflix has Chromecast support and Lightbox in a few weeks.

Looks OK, but breaks copyright laws......................................

Edit: maybe too many of these sites for the Feds to close down.
It's probably a losing battle :)
