| 1396944 | 2015-03-23 09:12:00 | Our 3yr old 46" Panasonic plasma puts our new 46" Samsung LCD to shame. But the plasma does reflect a lot of light, which is why we chose LCD for another room - much easier to see without partly drawing a curtain. There aren't many plasmas available now but for picture quality and rich colours, they are a good television set. |

Used the 3D once, the Smart side once, and spent $189 on a %@#$ camera we've not ever once used) Don't bother with Plasma unless you're on a tight budget, there's a reason why everything is moving to LED. For the most part it just looks nicer. If you can get 200Hz, all the better! 100Hz nice if you can't get a 200Hz TV. You'll find you'll notice the 200 / 100Hz ones more in-store because of the difference in motion. Basically: Go into the store, find the nicest biggest looking one you can that fits your budget. Then get that model. Don't let them upsell you on Smart / 3D / Curved TVs. Don't let them upsell you on fancy HDMI cables for $100 that do nothing more than a $10 job. Just find something you like how the picture looks, coz you're the one who's going to be watching it. |

| 1396946 | 2015-03-23 18:08:00 | I would not discount a Smart TV as online TV is changing the landscape, the one I have is one of the earlier incarnations of internet connectivity but in todays world is not suitable for lightbox if your with Spark say But a conventional LED TV would be cheaper allowing you to configure with other add on's for online streaming Get the biggest that suits, not many say I should have got a smaller one  |

I also agree that you can pretty much pick a TV at random and it will be OK - it is if you want better than "OK" that you need to start looking more closely. The remote is one thing, although that is not such a big deal for me as I have a Logitech Harmony that is brilliant and replaces 4 other remotes. |

I disagree with LED looking nicer, the reason it's moving that way is about manufacturing and marketing and not picture quality. Better technology often loses. Plasma does not suffer from motion jitter like LCD so doesn't require super high refresh rates and "motion flow" type technologies to fix it, has inherently better blacks and contrast ratio, and tends to have richer looking colours as a result. The downsides are that it is not as good for text and therefore not good as a monitor, is physically heavier, has a glossy glass screen which is highly reflective, and can use slightly more power. At the same price point plasma looks better, at higher prices LED tends to be the only option so there's nothing to compare anyway. +1 for everything else you said though, totally agree. |

| 1396949 | 2015-03-23 23:27:00 | :2cents: Dont think how they look in the shop is how they will look at home. Shop TV's are often setup badly, making even good TV's look less than average, and sometimes the signal they feed them is really really bad. If demoing in-shop, demo from a Bluray , go into the menu & make sure the TV setup isnt some demo or showroom mode. Dont demo a TV from cartoons/animations either . |

| 1396951 | 2015-03-24 00:03:00 | Good point, I think some shops might deliberately adjust the ones they want to sell to look better also. I once had a play with the settings of a cheapo screen sitting next to a much more expensive samsung in a shop and found with a bit of tweaking I could get the picture to look almost the same. Initially the cheap one looked horrible by comparison, when I was done it still wasn't as good but the difference was a lot less noticeable. Should have gone back later to see if it got changed back. | dugimodo (138) | ||
| 1396952 | 2015-03-24 04:20:00 | If you want to benefit from the 4k shows on Netflix, I hink a smart TV app would be the only way I can think of to show it. Mind you I haven't seen a 4k TV that isn't smart | plod (107) | ||
