1396988 2015-03-23 02:21:00 Bit of a long shot, but thought I'd post here in case anyone else ever had the same thing...

One of the door lock actuators (right rear) in my '96 LN85 Hilux has died. Trying to find a replacement, but it turns out it's quite hard to find. The vehicle is NZ new, but it seems that the central locking was added on arrival in NZ, so all the Toyota part numbers etc mean nothing.

The part number on the actuator seems to be just for the plastic case, so that's not a lot of help either.

I could get a universal type one and modify the mount and cabling, but I'd really like to avoid that if possible. I haven't tried a wreckers yet, that is the netxt step, but Toyota can't seem to find one.

If anyone has had a similar situation I'd be interested to know what you ended up doing.

Thanks!

1396989 2015-03-23 03:27:00 I was going to say - none of the wreckers had one??

I always go to them.

1396990 2015-03-23 03:53:00 I research about 5 or so web sites to find obscure/unstocked (In NZ) parts. Eventualy I end up buying direct from ebay (or stores) or the sellers related website. I recently bought Honda Odyssey parts - but for Honda Accord from the USA.

1. Start with Google images. Compare with your lock. Often ebay is prominent.
2, Wikipedia - Yes Wikipedia - Often they list equivalent/rebranded models in different markets. 4runner I think is similar to Hilux. Use those equivalent names for further research. Mate of mine found out the Honda Jazz has the same door lock as his Isuzu MU SUV.
3. Amazon. Loaded with 1000's of parts. Aim is to find reputable brand/oem quality items. But they list USA/Japan top brands (left hand side). e.g. Dorman for locks. Then maybe cross reference those parts on ebay. Getting the model (Hilux equivalent) and/or engine model/trim/transmission etc is often needed.
4. Search for online catalog either for Hilux or equivalent model. Should be plenty. Need chasis/engine codes. Again cross reference (well I do to eBay).
5. Aliexpress and Alibaba (often they list oem's). I have seen parts cheaper than ebay for parts research.

I have had good success this way buying online, and to discover equivalent car makes/models for parts.. If it exists on the internet for public access then should have a good chance to find.

1396991 2015-03-23 04:11:00 Well there was a time when one would try and repair it. :D

Does the electrical side of things have continuity of any sort? If so, it may be that the solenoid is seized and freeing it may fix things.

Does the power lead that connects to it actually provide power at the appropriate time?

Hard to guess from this distance, but a quick diagnosis by an auto electrician may be the best bet to start with.

Nothing like spending untold time locating a new part and fitting it only to find it still doesn’t work because the fault is elsewhere. :crying

Toyota are terrible at finding things, and when they do find them it costs a fortune. Wreckers are the way to go.

1396993 2015-03-25 23:05:00 Thanks everyone - in the end I pulled the thing apart and tested it properly - I should have taken some pictures of it. Ended up breaking the case, but just taped it back up afterwards...

It's just got a little motor in it - like this. 6322 Very simple setup. The central locking 'controller' just reverses the polarity of the signal sent to the motor depending on whether it's locking or unlocking.

Pulled the actual motor apart, give it a good blow out and a whack, lubed the bearings, put it back together and it's working mint! I expect it will crap out again soon, but I as long as I can get the plastic cog that's pressed onto the shaft off without breaking it I can just get a new motor, so that's good to know.
