485233 2006-09-16 05:03:00 Family member bought this NEC laptop and its ext USB DVD .
After a while the computer informed its owner that the program to run the External DVD Drive had expired its free trial period and therefore would shut down.
Now this puzzles me because as I understand it the use of XP means another program is not required.
But the thing will not work although XP says it is working OK.
Having had some considerable experience of Noels service I am reluctant to go through the hassle involved again, although the guarantee period still has some months left in its first year. But as we know Noels are reluctant to service what could be software faults.
The device is a DSPlayer and I went onto their website (www.drvupdate.com) which stated they would examine my computer and download the relevant update. But my computer is fine and does not use this equipment - the family member does NOT want to get involved with going on the internet.
Advice please
Tom

485234 2006-09-16 08:00:00 Run what exactly?
And what program expired?
Is it a DVDRom or a DVDWriter?

Do you want something to view mivies with or do burn data to blank DVDs?

485235 2006-09-16 08:00:00 You don't need to update the drive firmware. DSPlayer is the software, not the drive model. We need to know what type of drive it is before we can possibly help you.

Clearly stating your problem leads to accurate answers. You need to tell us what you have, what you are attempting to do, and what happens when you try to do it.

The unit is a burner writer - I believe it is supposed to burn DVDs but I am not too sure about that.
The program that caused the trouble is POWERDVD.
The unit is made by Behaviour Tech Computer Company
and on the back is described as a
POWER ADAPTTOR
MODEL No DA-30C01

Does this help?

485237 2006-09-16 09:14:00 Depends what u mean by since its XP nothing else is required, if u mean to play DVD, you may still need codecs if u use WMP. For playing DVD's. If PowerDVD came with the DVD, it should be a full version, not a trial.

If u mean for burning DVD's, (thats if its a DVD writer), XP by default doesnt support burning to DVD.

You need something else, like Nero, or a program that supports burning to DVD.

If it is a DVDWriter (or burner, same thing) then it will write (burn) DVDs.

PowerDVD is just for viewing movies.

485240 2006-09-16 22:43:00 Well if nothing else I'm learning - been learning about computers pretty intensely for about 12+ years now - and I still know nothing.
Codec and WMP have me puzzled - what are they?
To be honest this particular laptop I cannot see ever being used for burning DVDs - it MAY be used occasionally to copy a CD but it belongs to a family member who has the crazy idea that computers are here to serve her and be useful not need constant attention. She wants to play her DVD films.
It looks to me as though Noel Leeming have supplied an incorrect limited copy of POWERDVD and should replace it with a version that does not shut down.
I'll get onto them and see what the result is.

485241 2006-09-17 00:17:00 It sounds as if the programme you need for viewing movies (PowerDVD) was a trial version. Which is really cheap because you normally get fully operable software when you get a new DVD drive. You'll need to find an alternative player. Greg (193)
485242 2006-09-17 04:32:00 Was this external Dvd burner supplied FREE with the laptop or purchased seperatly?

I believe the unit your talking about is a BTC external dvd writer. All BTC dvd & cd units internal OR external come with Nero for burning & power Dvd for playing dvd's. Where are you getting DSplayer from??

The versions that come with the burner will last forever...there would be a product key with each title as well.

Un-install & re-install the software that came with the unit.
