485018 2006-09-15 20:22:00 Hi,
I have a Radeon 9600 card and the fan has been a getting noisier over the last few months. It has over the last few months been noisy in the mornings and usually stops after few minutes but now I have noticed that the noise will just appear at any time and can last for a few hours.

I pulled out the card and cleaned the dust from the fan. I was even able to unscrew the fan from the card so I am guessing it is possible to replace the fan but I can not find (online) anywhere that sells just the fan.

Does anyone know if the fans can be purchased on their own or will I be up for a new card?

485019 2006-09-15 20:42:00 Hi.

I think it might be the bearings in the fan that are starting to wear causing the noice...

You could replacle the whole HSF maybe one of these (www.ascent.co.nz) you card will get better cooling and be even quieter due to the larger fan.

But I am not sure if you can replace the fan...

485020 2006-09-15 20:43:00 I opened one of these fans on a whim and found that after I pulled off the sticker over the bearing, I was able to use some 3-in-1 or sewing machine oil on the bearing and it ran fine for another year or 14 months .

I also oversped another fan on the CPU once when I used compressed air to clean the cooling fins (that was dumb!), and did the same thing . . but it wasn't as successfull that time .

It might be a crapshoot (legal word there) .

485021 2006-09-15 21:16:00 I've lubricated fans like that in the past too. However, be sure to only use finest grade oil, eg sewing machine or 3-in-1 as mentioned, only use a single drop! And ensure that the sticker is well sealed when you replace it.

But yeah, you can replace a fan only - DSE have a small range of them.

Hi Sam, i have got the same card - Radeon 9600 Pro, same prob ;), i have been trying to source a replacement fan locally for a couple of weeks as well, have finally found a shop that has ordered one in, but won't know if its the right one till i check it out next week, i tried all the local puter shops, as well as DSE, who insisted i couldn't get the part through them...

I am also contemplating using the oil on the bearings if this ordered fan is a no go...
I have a feeling the fan they may have ordered may be the one from the link TEOR provided.

I thought it would be a standard easily ordered part, but not so, i was hoping to avoid having to do the heatsink and just replace the fan itself.

If you haven't found one before then i will let you know how i go with the one they have ordered :).

485023 2006-09-16 07:04:00 Thanks all, I went into a couple of computer shops and also DSE. The computer shops told me to bring it in without even bothering to say whether it was possible or not. One of the shops is where I bought my rig from over a year ago - looks like I'm not going back there again. Went to DSE, wondered around a bit, asked a staff member who couldn't really answer so gave up as time was against me.

Got home and decided to try lubricating the fan. Pulled the card out, removed fan. Peeled the bottom sticker off (after I pulled the top one off which was a waste of time) and with the help of thin steel wire, smeared some auto trans oil around the centre. Back together again and so far (3 hours and counting) no noise.

The true test will be tomorrow morning as it always occurred first thing and also interesting to see how long this fix lasts.

485024 2006-09-17 21:56:00 Bad choice of oil mate. But yeah, it's still an effective stop-gap until you find yourself a replacement. Keep in mind that you can probably use a fan from a similar older card.

Try overclockers.co.nz's forum for getting a spare.

Also for the benefit of any others that start getting a bearing wear problem like this - it's certain that you'll extend the life of the fan considerably if you do the lube thing urgently as soon as you detect the problem.
