485185 2006-09-17 12:47:00 Window Media Player 10 is what we use, it is the easiest by far Billy.

In WMP theres a button along the top labelled 'Rip'. Put your CD in, click that button and it rips your CD tracks into a folder with the Album name & Title and all the tracks are named too. It also displays a picture of the CD cover when playing in WMP.

Can't be easier than clicking one button!

485186 2006-09-17 12:48:00 Audiograbber ( Requires lame_enc.dll for MP3 encoding. My usual modus operandi for Audiograbber is to rip to wav, then batch-transcode with MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net" target="_blank">www.audiograbber.com-us.net/) - an excellent, freeware CD ripper. I can't use that because I don't run XP, though I wonder if it is worth trying anyway, it may just run though from memory you can't download the install files unless you are running XP. If anybody can email me the install file for WMP-V10 then a PM would be appreciated, though I'll bet that it will just check the OS and refuse to install.

I might try Neil's suggestion as well, I prefer that over Bletch's because I want a one-step operation that can run in the background. I am ripping Jazz CDs for my son and some have very long tracks that make huge files.

I am doing OK with the beta Cdex, but I have one CD with very long tracks (up to 20 minutes) that just hangs every time, though at different points through the tracks. I particularly like Cdex because it sets up the folders automatically etc. Does anybody know of a download for mature version higher than 1.51 but below the V1.70 beta 2 version I am using?

Cheers

485188 2006-09-18 05:11:00 I know windows users think itunes is bloated, but give it a try anyway

I second the iTunes recommendation. Although I only started using it when I got my iPod, I think it beats the pants off any other programme when it comes to ripping CDs. iTunes calls it "importing", which is far more "dignified" than the brutal "ripping" everyone else seems to resort to ;)

Step 1: Insert CD
[track listing downlaoded from Gracenote CDDB]

Step 2: Click "Import CD"
[tracks imported into iTunes library, stored in artist/album/song, folder/file format]

Step 3: Relax...

WMP is to user-friendly media management what nails are to a blackboard  Now if only Apple would release the iTunes store in NZ...

Well, I downloaded the bloat and after killing off the various shortcuts and other garbage that it brought with it, depite my saying NO at every available opportunity, it looks to have a very simnple interface as suggested.

However, it does seem as slow as a wet week, taking just under 50% of the playing time to "import" one track. I will be interested to see if this steady as she goes approach manages to get all the tracks in full as I have two CDs that pretty much refuse to copy and they are both new.

It has just completed the first track in 8 minutes, and now it is playing the first track as well. I've muted it, but how do I stop it doing that after every track is ripped (sorry, imported)?

Cheers

In preference under importing untick the box that says play song while importing or converting. In windows it might be under the advance tab

485191 2006-09-18 11:22:00 In preference under importing untick the box that says play song while importing or converting. In windows it might be under the advance tab Thanks Plod, I'd found that pretty quickly, and the reason for the slow rip... err..........import :D was because I'd not set it to MP3.

Now that all is configured, it is ripporting (new Billy word) the files to the correct directory and has converted the "impossible" cd perfectly in one pass.

I'm happy with that, in fact I'm ecstatic, because that means I no longer have to watch what is going on, and if I set it to eject the CD when finished, I can build a library while doing my work, just swapping CDs when the old one is finished.

I've uninstalled the rest of the rippers.

Cheers

485193 2006-09-19 03:14:00 Arrrrggghhhh . . . . . . . . . . I've been misled!

iTunes can't automatically eject the CD when it has finished converting it! What a let-down, I want my money back!

Cdex could shut down my computer when it finished copying . . . . . . Hell! Sometimes Cdex would shut it down before it had even finished!!

What kind of junk program won't automatically eject a CD? I ask you, sheesh! :groan:

If I have to stress my mousing finger and click a button to eject a CD I'm going back to cassette tapes . :annoyed:

Cheers
