484924 2006-09-15 10:15:00 I hate correcting Jen (as she spanks me if I do) but...

It's the "b" or "B" that you look for to denote "bits" or "Bytes", not (usually) the k.
Some reporting is in kbits/s, some can be in kBytes.

As above there are 8 bits to a Byte.

484925 2006-09-15 10:15:00 Thanks Jen. I am now a little wiser and appreciate your help. I have done very little downloading of files in the two weeks I have been on BB. I will have another go at the Google Earth during the day for a comparison. I never thought of that. Cheers. Pato (2463)

Now I am confused. In that case is my download speed of 110kb/s very slow for 2mbs on Telestra Cable?. If not what should I expect?.

484927 2006-09-15 10:25:00 I hate correcting Jen (as she spanks me if I do) but...That's OK - besides I know you enjoy it :p.

I was going on memory and had a vague feeling I didn't have it quite right.

484928 2006-09-15 10:28:00 How do you work out that transfer rate?. My 110kbps is equivalent to 13kbps?.
And if mine does seem a bit slow is there anything I can do about it?.

It would save a lot of confusion if the difference between bits and bytes was shown correctly.
It occurs frequently on this forum and the difference is important.

kilobytes per second is shown as KBps
kilobits per second is shown as kbps or Kbps

484929 2006-09-15 10:50:00 Thanks Safari. I think I am now clear on the speed and just have to have some more download experience on Broadband to see how my speeds match up. Pato (2463)
484930 2006-09-15 10:56:00 Just trying Google Earth here, my normal download speed is 3,200 kbps (400 kBps) but Google Earth is only 30 kBps.

Just because you have a car that can do 200 km/h, if you are in a traffic jam its matters little, your speed is that which the road users allow, and how wide the road is.

You do not have the entire internet to yourself...

Thanks. I am familiar with cars and traffic jams but am new to Broadband hence my questions.
