484914 2006-09-15 09:09:00 I have searched all the Threads and have learnt a lot but can someone enlighten me regarding these speeds. I have been on Telestra Cable 2mbs for last two weeks. When I do a meter test (consumer.org.nz) I am getting download speeds of around 1920kbps and upload speeds of around 1890kbps. I just downloaded the programme "Google Earth" and got a download speed of around 110kb/s. Is this normal please?. Pato (2463)
484915 2006-09-15 09:13:00 try the speed test @ www.nzdsl.co.nz And see what sort of result you get. stu161204 (123)
484916 2006-09-15 09:16:00 Speeds are also dependent upon the server you are downloading off. If it is busy with many people accessing the server, then your speed will also be affected. Sometimes different protocols eg ftp vs http can affect your speed. Jen (38)
484917 2006-09-15 09:28:00 Thanks Jen. So you are not surprised at the download speed I got?. What download speeds could I expect to get?. Pato (2463)

484919 2006-09-15 09:44:00 Your download speed for the google earth does seem a bit slow. I just tried downloading that file off Google and while it started off fast it levelled out about 64 Kbps (512 kbps). Your 110 kbps is equivalent to 13 Kbps.

My speed from nzdsl on a 2 Mb connection was:
Download Speed: 749 kbps (93.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 120 kbps (15 KB/sec transfer rate)

484920 2006-09-15 10:02:00 How do you work out that transfer rate?. My 110kbps is equivalent to 13kbps?.
And if mine does seem a bit slow is there anything I can do about it?.

484921 2006-09-15 10:04:00 I'm paying for a 2mb connection with Xnet (Xnet High Speed Internet), and I'm getting around 970kbps down and 122 kbps up, should I be contacting them or is it normal? bizzack (7739)
484922 2006-09-15 10:10:00 How do you work out that transfer rate?. My 110kbps is equivalent to 13kbps?.The difference is with the Kbps and kbps unit. Even though stored data and internet data is measured slightly differently, for simplicity you just divide kbps by 8 to get Kbps.

Have you tried downloading that file at different times of the day to see if it makes a difference. Do you notice that all your downloads from various sites seem really slow?

484923 2006-09-15 10:11:00 It sounds as though your knowledge of Broadband is about the same as mine - very limited. Perhaps Jen or someone will be able to help both of us. Pato (2463)
