485547 2006-09-18 23:40:00 I use dialup. For some time I have been considering broadband but hanging back while the infighting went on.
Yesterday I watched a Noel Leeming technician use a family members laptop to access the internet and download some files needed. I was very impressed. My laptop has a "hole" to add wireless but I have not bothered. Now I wonder, would wireless access to the internet be a better route than going for broadband.
The cost of the wireless bit needed to fill the hole didn't seem too much according to the quote from NL.

It's advice I want and some details ref costs etc etc (and for good luck another etc).

485548 2006-09-18 23:51:00 I think you are probably referring to cellular "wireless", using a CPRS or CDMA card.

"Woosh" wireless (a different system) uses an external modem, and is only available in a few parts of the country.

Just check with your bank manager first as to the ability to pay for the data from a cellular connection. Casual rates are 10c per 10 kB, which is $10 per MB, or $1,000 per GB. Contracted rates will be a lot better, but never in the same arena as ADSL.

485549 2006-09-19 00:54:00 Telecom T3G's are okay, we use them at work, Vodaphone has a like product.

I think some of the contracts 2 or 3 yrs supply the aircard ($400) for free on 1Gb $50 p/mth plan. Not sure about Vodaphone.

Alternative, get telecom xtra with wireless router for home, and buy wireless NIC to plug into that hole in your laptop. You will be on a better contract, better speed and capping for your home, just remember its for home only.

485550 2006-09-19 01:08:00 Broadband and wireless @ home is the same thing, you need a broadband modem that connects to a wireless router, which sends a signal to your notebook wireless card, which is only available at your home -however mobile (anywhere with signal) internet is getting more popular as speeds are very quick now, you can choose from Telecom or vodafone - you will need a bluetooth cellphone or mobile card to run it though maulaulau (6699)

485552 2006-09-19 05:21:00 Just to clarify for you Thomas, broadband means high speed internet. It is not specific to ADSL, but includes wireless, cable and satellite as well.

Wireless options include Woosh and 3G services from Telecom and Vodafone. Unless you need to roam though, at this stage it is best to stick with ADSL for high speed internet access. The card you are probably referring to is a WiFi card. This allows you to connect to a short range wireless network. For example, I have a wireless base station plugged into my ADSL modem (you can get modems with WiFi intergrated as well) which allows any desktop/laptop in my house to connect to the internet wirelessly. For most users that don't want to be tied to one location in their house, but don't make heavy use of the internet outside their house, this is the best solution. :)
