2006-09-18 21:47:00 | I have been using Windows Vista for the last few months and recently upgraded to the 5600 RC1 release. I find that it is quite solid (compared to the previous release that is) and there aren't many bugs in the system. Most of the software I'm using on my Windows XP Home install works fine with Vista RC1 apart from 1 or 2 apps that I don't really use that often. I have to say that 1 observation that i have made is that ALL the OPEN SOURCE software that I used installs and functions flawlessly (poetic justice?) Anyways to this end I am proposing that we start a "Windows Vista Experience" thread. With Vista's release most likely next year it would give us all an idea of what it can and can't do... a sort of FAQ for Vista. I have already been asked by other F1'ers about sending them a copy of the 5600 RC1 release DVD. I happy to do this but sometimes it may be difficult to dispatch the DVD's ASAP. I hope to combat this by getting the ISO images and maybe a collection of apps that are reported as working fine with Vista onto a local server. That way users with low caps can get the software without blowing their data allowances on an overseas download. I don't mind paying for the server (hopefully I can keep the cost to a minimum) but I won't say NO to anyone who wishes to share the cost with me. Alternatively if anyone is able to provide our efforts with the space at NO or LOW charge then that would be most appreciated as well. In the end I hope that this suggestion will be received well by all and also that it will be stickied for future reference. Let me know what you think so that we can get the ball rolling. cheers chiefnz

2006-09-18 22:47:00 | I have a puttload of transfer from an offshore server that you can use chiefnz. You have a PM Anyways, Ive been using it since back when it was Build 4056 of Longhorn and it simply looked like XP with a different skin (and a few other changes). Its definately come a long way, but Im not sure if its long enough... But damn, Ive seen screenshots for DX10 games and wow they're beautiful! Cant remember the name of the one I was reading about (from the makers of FarCry) but its compatible with DX9 (Pre-vista) and DX10 (vista) for much more beautiful graphics. The permissions of being a "user" get a lil annoying sometimes, but oh well.

2006-09-18 23:03:00 | Yes you do need an activation code for the software. All you need to do is head to the Windows Vista Site (www.microsoft.com) where you have to register, once registered MS will send you an email with an activation code. You will then be able to install Vista RC1. If you have a previous activation code from one of the other beta releases that code will still work with RC1. Sol, pm me with your address and I will try to get a disc to you ASAP (you are currently 2nd in line) cheers chiefnz

2006-09-19 00:46:00 | I think I should mention this from the start, Chill has graciously offered to host our little Vista project. However, due to bandwidth constraints there will be a limited number of downloads per months. As such only certain members will be allowed access to the address of where the files are hosted. At this stage I have proposed to Chill that regular PressF1 members with a post count of at least 500 be allowed access. You will be asked to send a PM and that way we can verify who you are. As for those with post counts lower than 500 we will have to enlist the help of those members who have access to a DVD burner and ask them to burn copies for F1'ers in their area. Cheers chiefnz

2006-09-19 03:04:00 | I was pushing the limits a little by running Vista as a virtual machine on my notebook but it seems to run moderately well even with quite low processor power and only the minimum 512MB of memory allocated to it . I don't wish to sound negative but I have a few problems with the way things are set up . 1 . The new Start menu layout provides far too many options . This may well confuse new users to the platform . 2 . I was under the impression that an actual separation of administrative accounts and user accounts would be the default . Instead they have uncleanly coupled security concerns to the user interface (the whole Windows needs your permission . . . dialog) . 3 . It failed to be able to detect and use a perfectly generic VMWare virtual ethernet card . They at least need a "Generic" driver to fall back on to allow basic use of devices which follow a standard interface . I hope this is fixed before release . 4 . I didn't think it would be possible to make the configuration system more convoluted, inconsistent and hard to use, but Microsoft have managed it . The jump to Vista is by no means going to be easy for many users .

2006-09-19 03:48:00 | Ok just to keep everyone up to speed as to what is going on. I have all the info and hardware (Thanks Chill) to upload the ISO image. I have 2 options... 1) start uploading now on a measley 128 connection or 2) start uploading tonight @ work on a 54Mbps connection. Seen as the image is 2.5GB it's gonna take a hell of a long time on Teleslow's 128 connection so I am opting to do the upload from work. Once the image is uploaded I will be asking certain "regular" F1ers to download the image and possibly make copies available to others in their area. Please note: this image does not come with an activation code!!! You must have registered with MS to get an acivation code so that you can use Vista. As I have stated before if you have used a previous beta release then that same activation code will work for the 5600 RC1 release. Cheers chiefnz
