485899 2006-09-20 06:17:00 Hey folks,

My dad is looking to upgrade the ram in his laptop. He currently has 512MB (2 x 256) and he is looking to upgrade to 1GB (probably 1 x 1GB stick). Hes not looking at anything fancy, just generic ram that works well.

We are going to Auckland in the school hols (we live in new plymouth) and I was wondering where we could go to get some ram at decent prices.

Has anyone got any suggestions/reccomendations of where to go? Or where not to go?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

(ps, we only have a choice of small local comp shops or DSE to get ram from, neither of which can probably give the best prices, hence the reason for me posting this thread)

485900 2006-09-20 06:21:00 Why not buy online?

check www.pricespy.co.nz for a range of prices and shops

485901 2006-09-20 06:32:00 Thanks for the suggestion, but dad doesn't like buying online.

He prefers walking into a store, paying there and getting the goods in his hand then and there.

485902 2006-09-20 06:44:00 Some of the shops listed are also retail outets in Auckland so you can check online and go collect! SolMiester (139)
485903 2006-09-20 06:51:00 Any particular store(s) I should be looking at. Are there any places that have a bad rep (ie very poor service, customer support etc) and should thus be avoided?

Thanks for info so far

485904 2006-09-20 06:56:00 I recommend P B Tech in Penrose. Good prices, good service, friendly, no problems if you ever have to make a warranty claim.

Website: http://www.pbtech.co.nz

I suggest you take your notebook with you and they'll install the RAM for you on the spot so you can be sure it works.

485906 2006-09-21 01:57:00 It has to be DDR2 SODIMM, for use in an intel celeron m based system. I take it that any speed 400Mhz and up ram would do the job? We are mainly looking at 533MHz ram as that seems to be the most common speed. Sherman (9181)
485907 2006-09-21 02:20:00 If you want to buy it "over the counter", then you may need to pre-arrange it in order for it to be "in stock" when you walk in.

As RAM prices can be volatile, many shops get it in on an as-required" basis, particularly for slower selling lines such as SODIMM. Even the "in stock" numbers often reflect more what the wholesaler has rather than what is actually on the shop shelf.

The prices may be quite similar between DSE and the others, but with DSE if it's not right for any reason within 14 days (including changing your mind after purchase) you get your money back. But they would need to order it in as well, takes a couple of days.

485908 2006-09-21 02:33:00 Actually, the DSE prices for a 1GB DDR2 533MHz SODIMM ram is $298 (thats the 'dse' brand as well. I have no idea who makes those chips, and so I don't know whether they are high quality ram, or just generic stuff.

Ive been looking at prices online, and prices for most ram seems to be around the $200 - $230 (gst inclusive) price range.

So unless the DSE ram is high quality stuff, there is quite a significant price difference.
If it is high quality ram, then I think the dse price is fair.

Can anyone enlighten me DSE ram IS any better than say hynix, legend etc???
Or is it about the same, and thus quite expensive for what it is?

Thanks
