485753 2006-09-19 22:31:00 We have a cheap webcam from Dick Smiths, $32 if I remember right . It is OK except for some stilted or jerky movements at times . Don;t know if this is the quality of the wabcam or our setup .

The microphone? We have used both . Headset with mic, & seperate mic . No problem with either . I am quite deaf so at the moment I am using a seperate desk mic & the computer speakers, which I can turn up loud .

My suggestion is the latter if you are like me . Also , if you get them from Dick Smiths you can change them if they don't suit you . Try middle of the price range (unless you have pots of money!!!) PJ:2cents:

485754 2006-09-19 22:44:00 Just spotted your budget limit, sorry. Be aware, tho, that cheap does not always = quality. I know how you feel budgetwise, you can only stretch a pension so far. PJ Poppa John (284)
485755 2006-09-20 03:05:00 I have both a headset/microphone and a USB webcam with an inbuilt microphone.

The web cam I bought from Dick Smiths and paid about $77 for it. There was a cheaper model with no microphone, but the camera specs were lower than for the higher specked one. Am more than happy with the quality of what I have.

I use it over Skype and find the webcam with inbuilt mic ideal for a family/group around the computer and all can hear through the attached speakers. However, if I just want to talk privately then I use the headset/mic. It is fairly easy to change the sound input source within Skype.

One thing I did do was buy a splitter so that sound can be directed to the speaker or headset, from the soundcard, so that I did not have to keep changing output plugs depending on what item to use.

485757 2006-09-20 21:42:00 gidday,

a genius web cam I own with mic installed, video works fine, but the mic had a fair bit of white noise when speaking. Changing to either a head piece, or
a stand alone mic fixed the problem.

Fair to say I think, a head set will give you better clarity of sound, stand alone mics and embedded in web cams while give greater freedom, do have a tendency to hear background sound, and can cause cutting.

cheers,

Robby
