485418 2006-09-18 06:38:00 Hey all,
A friend of mine has hooked up to xtra broadband, and is using a wireless router. She has a desktop which has a USB wireless thingy, and a wireless capable laptop. XP Home is running on both. She would like to have both computers able to access the internet, and each other.
She wants to know how to make it all secure, and I have no idea as I have wires running everywhere. *grin*

Any advice would be appreciated.

485419 2006-09-18 08:54:00 An access point would help, or a router that supports WPA/WPA 2.

Thats if routers support WPA/WPA 2 or other encryption.

485420 2006-09-18 09:05:00 1. Turn on encryption.
2. Use MAC addressing - this is where only registered MAC addresses (the physical address of the NIC card) are allowed to talk with the WAP.
3. Turn the WAP off when not in use.

Above all - do no commence using a WAP (wireless access point) until you have set up at least 1. and 2. above unless you want somebody else accessing your LAN and/or internet connection.

485421 2006-09-18 09:32:00 Access point, is that the router? The connection to the internet? Siani (7815)

Don't know. Dont have a router.

So, dont know if routers have built in access points as well. Read the manual for the router. See if has an AP in it.

485423 2006-09-18 09:43:00 I phrased that badly.

What is an access point?

ETA: I'm looking it up....

485425 2006-09-18 10:03:00 An AP or Acess Point is the equivilant of a wireless switch, it allows PC's with wifi cards to connect to each other through it. The name "wireless router" is actually a lil bit misleading, in reality it contains a DSL modem, router, AP and possibly a switch.

The best way to secure a wireless network is with WPA encryption and MAC address filtering. Realistically these are both falable, but should stop all but the most skilled (highly unlikely they would both targeting your friend).

Like said early if your really concerned about security then turn the router off when your not using it.

485427 2006-09-18 10:39:00 According to their FAQs it has WEP and WPA.
