485407 2006-09-18 04:16:00 Hi there!
When using Auckland City Library Catalog PC blocks access to search a book results by blocking pop-up window. I have Win xp home without service packs. lt was ok until today. Can it be virus or spyware? On other websites there are no problems.
Any ideas?
Thanks

485409 2006-09-18 05:04:00 Try deleting cookies, then install SP2. Without it, more can attack. It is a known fact that the initial release of XP can be taken down in 2 minutes by the Blaster worm. pcuser42 (130)
485410 2006-09-18 10:48:00 Best to advise us what browser you're using.

And yeah - get a service pack installed... at least SP1. If you go to SP2 make absolutely sure your system is clean of malware, viruses etc first.

I am assuming that you have XP here . . . or you wouldn't be asking about this .

The "clean" part in the above post/reply is primary! If you have ANY junk on your system . . . you can pretty well bet that SP-2 will muck things up .

I have seen so many late installs of SP-2 that screwed up the opsys . . . but all is not lost . SP-2 horor stories are by people who waited too long to get it .

Turn off System Restore, purge and clean like a mad Dutch woman and then run every piece of anti-stuff you have .

To turn off System Restore: go to My Computer>>Control Panel>>System and go to System Restore tab and click in the Turn Off System Restore On All Drives box . IGNORE THE DIRE WARNINGS . . . they are just M$'s way of not telling you the truth . You are the master here, not M$! :groan:

I don't recommend that you try to get SP-2 via FireFox either . . . there MIGHT be some conflicts with that browseer . . . Mr Bill doesn't like FireFox much . Hopefully you have the SP-2 disc from M$ at this time . . . but you can download it if you have a very large cap (or none at all!) .

I very sincerly recommend getting and running the following:

Spybot S&D (http://www . safer-networking . org/)

AdAware ( . lavasoftusa . com/software/adaware/" target="_blank">www . lavasoftusa . com)

SpyWare Blaster ( . javacoolsoftware . com/spywareblaster . html" target="_blank">www . javacoolsoftware . com)

HiJackThis ( . majorgeeks . com/download3155 . html" target="_blank">www . majorgeeks . com) (here, a mirror site, as the Merjin home is kinda hard to navigate) . . . and post a copy on this site for perusal of our resident HiJackThis gurus . . Sir Speedy or Pancake!

BTW: get Belarc Adviser ( . belarc . com/free_download . html" target="_blank">www . belarc . com) to get a snapshot of your system before you lose the keys and licenses for your programs . . . it will run in your default browser and then you can print it out (recommended heartilly!) for future reference . Everybody should do this yearly or after adding new hardware and programs .

When all is clean and squeaks, then turn on System Restore again and get SP-2 ( . microsoft . com/uk/windows/sp2/default . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) here .

When you get it finally in/downloaded, then it'll be time to get some of these toys and tweaks from this site ( . aumha . org/freeware/freeware . php#aida" target="_blank">www . aumha . org) .
