485987 2006-09-21 00:09:00 I have two flash drives, a Sony Microvault and a no name brand. My XP SP2 system does not recognise either, I plug them into the USB port but there is no response. I have confirmed that the USB port works with other devices.
Any ideas?

485988 2006-09-21 00:28:00 can you see removable drives in "my computer"?
suggest you have a look at the bios, see if there is any setting
for usb mass storage.

485989 2006-09-21 00:40:00 I assume you have tested these drives in another computer, to make sure that they aren't faulty.

Other than that, judging by what you're saying, windows isn't even picking them up. Right click on My Computer, go to Properties-Hardware-Device manager, and see if they are in there (they may have an exclamation mark next to them).

Oh - and welcome to PressF1

485990 2006-09-23 23:13:00 Drives work OK in another computer. They are not listed in Device Manager and when I try to install new hardware system can't find drivers. I have used Flash Drives on the PC before. Gerry (5810)
485991 2006-09-23 23:47:00 You havent formatted this computer recently have u??

If u have, delete the USB controller entries in device manager, and reboot.

485993 2006-09-25 10:53:00 with the usb drive plugged in
right click "my computer" choose "manage" double click on "storage" in right pane double click on "disk management"

is the usb drive listed there?
if so is the drive letter assigned to it the same as

another fixed drive or
drive letter assigned to a network shareif either point 1 or 2 are true, change the drive letter of the usb drive to one that is not assigned to anything ( right click on usb drive choose "change drive letter" follow that through)

485994 2006-09-26 03:16:00 The USB drive is not listed here Gerry (5810)
485995 2006-09-26 04:51:00 with the usb device plugged in

go to device manager
expand the tree labeled " universal serial bus controllers" are there any yellow exclaimition marks or red crosses through anything there.

have you been to the usb pen drive manufacturer site to see if there are any updates there for those drives (for your os).

go to your pc manafactur site see if theres any updates there as well

I know of least one intel board that wont reconise usb 2 unless a manufacturer patch is run (even with sp1 & 2 installed)

please confirm
usb drives work on other machines
you have tested the same usb ports with other usb devices
Have you tried Speedy's suggestion
beama (111)
485996 2006-09-27 05:15:00 Yes usb drives work on other machines and other devices work in usb port. Under Device Manager I have:
USB Root Hub (5 of these)
VIA Rev5 or later usb universal host controller (4 of these)
VIA usb Enhanced Host Controller (1 of these)
None have yellow exclamation marks or red crosses
Which if any should I delete?
