| 486730 | 2006-09-23 02:55:00 | :help: When I right click on the desktop to bring up the 'context menu' then hover the mouse down over the 'New >' menu item, my computer 'sleeps' for about 10 seconds before bringing up the sub-menu. I hav tried all i can think of to fix it. The rest of the computer operation is as zippy as ever. I did notice my internet connection (ADSL via LAN-cable) was set up to use proxy connection of 12.144.99.18, which was suspicious so i downloaded and installed mcaffee anti-virus but it found nothing. (since, disabled the proxy). Any ideas? (winxp-pro, 1G ram, 70G hdd with 16G free) :badpc: |

When was the last time you defragmented your HDD? Do you have a reliable third-party firewall installed? Are you accessing the Internet from somewhere in New Zealand? Cheers :) |

| 486732 | 2006-09-23 22:47:00 | Hello JamesKan Thanks for taking an interest in my problem :D , there was no hdd activity, or internet . then . . . A smartie pants friend :nerd: came over and figured it out in 10 seconds flat! - dont you hate that? aparently, one of the items on the 'new' menu was not associated to a file type (????) he said the extension ' . ipp' was not known so the computer spent a while trying to figure it out, then he went to some registry and deleted the item, good as gold now Yes i did get a firewall - Mcafee Security Centre package has a firewall which i downloaded for $US79 to try fix the above problem, but that seems to slow my 2 . ?GHz athlon down to a crawl, it takes ~10 minutes to open the email every time, so i guess that will be the next thing to get deleted . . . I could understand it wanting to scan my email directory the first time it is installed, but does the 10-minute thing every time i start outlook express . Cheers . PS this is really cool web site . | 486734 | 2006-09-23 23:24:00 | According to DNSstuff, the IP belongs to Wisconsin state in United States -> www.dnsstuff.com Do you have any anti-malware software installed on your computer? If you are not sure what do I mean by "anti-malware", you might want to check out PressF1's FAQ for the definition -> faqf1.net.nz Cheers :) |
