486034 2006-09-21 06:00:00 Forgive me if I missed this topic in the forums, I did search quite a bit. I've seen this issue in Google a lot but not associated with Mcafee.
Whenever I get a Mcafee update that requires a restart I get the "Windows cannot update files %1 from %2."-"Press any key to continue"-"If Windows fails to start run SETUP again"[whatever that means. When I press a key I'm told "Windows finished updating the files and is loading". When I check to see if there are any Mcafee updates I'm up to date so I guess they're being updated.
The two main culprits mentioned in my Google searches are SYSTEMS RESTORE and a corrupt wininit.exe file. I disabled RESTORE to no avail. This is where it gets good [worse?]. Microsoft says to extract a new wininit.exe file from the :\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL folder. Its not in there, it was in :WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\WIN_17.CAB. Anyway, when I try to extract it I'm told it doesn't exist [I've seen it].
I do have a recovery disc with all the programs that came with the HP but before I try anything I'd like to ask what may seem dumb to some of you but please indulge me. Can I 'single out' just the Windows ME program and extract the file from it? Can I install just the ME without uninstalling what I have to replace ALL files? Is it, in fact, a corrupt file?
I seen viruses blamed so I did a Panda scan. It did find a virus that Mcafee missed but it didnt solve the problem. I've seen Norton blamed by some people with the same problem. Any help would be appreciated, its annoying as hell to sit here and wonder if your system coming back after every restart. Thanx.

486037 2006-09-21 20:37:00 Windows ME was in the PC World's bottom 25 tech products of all time! Forget Y2K! pcuser42 (130)
486038 2006-09-22 00:46:00 Well, that certainly answerd my question, Thanx stephan08611 (10225)
486039 2006-09-22 02:08:00 ME was a very unstable OPSYS . . . . not much better than what it replaced . . . and was rife with mistakes in code and operations .

People will indulge their fantasies and say they have not problems with it at all . . . but you are again living proof of that axiom that bad things happen to good people .

You can repair your ME with the original disc . . . I don't recommend using System Restore, as that's a safe harbor for malware and nasties .

Hopefully you have the original install disc . . . it will be necessary should you decide to burn the whole thing down and start all over again . . . but you will lose all your data and files that way .

Work on it a little while longer, and there are people here who still insist that their ME is the cat's . . . so don't totally dispair .

McAfee and Norton's/Symantec are also well disliked . . . they take a lot of resourses, and ME needs all it can get too . . . I suggest you really reconsider using any of the aforementioned security systems . . . there are a lot of others that are free and very good or minimally expensive and a lot better than what you've now got .

Stick in there and let us know what you decide to do . . . OK?

486040 2006-09-22 03:33:00 Thanks SurferJoe for taking the time to respond. I knew nothing of computers when I purchased this system [still don't]. But to be truthful I've had very little trouble with it. What problems I did have were virus/malware related and once I learned to clean things out [Ad-aware-SpywareBlaster-Panda] things were pretty smooth. But I think I figured out my problem and it WAS/IS Mcafee Auto Update. I switched setting today to scan manually. I just had an update that required restart and things went nicely.

While on the subject of AV programs, I love the Panda scan and actually tried their 30 day free trial once but it wouldn't work right. Whenever I do a scan now I have to remove a couple Windows security updates or Panda won't download, then I have to download the updates again. I think they may have been the reason the Panda AV trial wouldn't run. This was the 4/5th time Panda has found a virus [for free] that Mcafee couldn't find.

Thanks again for your time, problem solved!

486041 2006-09-22 04:14:00 One of the problems in ME was that the Ssytem Restore "feature" did not work in the version released . :( That would explain why it didn't help .

There is no "Windows ME program" . It's an operating system which contains a lot of files .

The "%1" and "%2" in the error message aren't really meant to be seen . . . they are tokens which should have been replaced with real file names .

The WININIT . EXE file almost certainly does not exist in a . CAB file . There will be a compressed vesrion of it, with a different extension . . . " . EX_" ' You will have to extract it from the CAB archive . Start a Command window and type extract /? . That will tell you how to extract the file .

486042 2006-09-22 05:01:00 Better still, upgrade to Windows XP. pcuser42 (130)
486043 2006-09-22 05:13:00 Thanks, Graham, for responding. I tried the command window thing and what popped up after I entered extract/? is way beyond my realm of expertise [zero to none, hence the 'Windows ME program' remark].
I'm not asking for anyone to divise the correct path for me, as long as manual updates from Mcafee keep the problem at bay I'm a happy camper. Thanx to all you guys.
