486003 2006-09-21 01:00:00 I've got a 5 yr old notebook with lots of programmes and data on it. My wife now wants a computer so the plan is to get her a note-book too. I also want to protect my programmes and data by keeping them on her computer as well. Some of these programmes like Nero have been downloaded directly. What's the best/most hassle-free solution to getting all this stuff on the new computer? :stare: :stare: thanks Johhnied (11172)
486004 2006-09-21 02:05:00 "Programmes" need to be installed, not copied. They will not work if "copied"

If they were downloaded you should have retained the original setup file to allow reinstallation. Also the original supplied serial number or key.

Data can be transferred OK

The simplest method is often to place the old hard drive (set as slave) into the new PC (using a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter) and transfer in that manner by copy and paste of data files, or place the old hard drive (set as is, as Master) into a 2.5" USB external case and connect in that manner, then copy and paste.

486005 2006-09-21 03:15:00 thanks GF, I suspected as much but hoped for an easier way. I will now get on with it. cheers, j Johhnied (11172)
486006 2006-09-21 04:59:00 Just buy an ethernet cable, plug it into each computer and drag and drop everything across.

Edit: Of course, it looks like you are using Windows, so as godfather says, you will need to reinstall the programs manually.

486007 2006-09-21 12:04:00 or if your laptop has a burner - copy docs onto cd & then to the new laptop.
don't attempt to take the hard drive out - it's a lot of mucking around & you have to buy an adapter. if you've got usb ports & minimum Win98 - use a flash drive.

486008 2006-09-21 14:27:00 Yes.. Flash drives are the way to go nowadays. They are easy, portable and fast!. Most computers made post-2000 should have USB ports.. be it 1.1 or 2.0. jamesjiao (2163)
