A few tips when selecting a host: 1) Contact their tech support and see if the response time and quality of the response meets your expectations. 2) Ask for a file to download off their servers so you can get an idea of download speeds (try during the day, or another time when overloading on Telecom's network won't influence the result). You should be averaging well over 100kbps. 3) Check they have an uptime guarantee and ask to see past success in meeting it. 4) Avoid heavy over sellers. You should expect to pay around US$10 for each 1GB or space and 50GB of transfer you get. Use that as a basis for calculating whether the host is super cheap, super expensive or about right. 5) Don't be tempted to buy from a heavy over seller. ie. avoid the 5GB space 100GB transfer, just $5 per month sort of deals. Hope that helps. :) |

Hope that helps. :) Those figures are if you buy from a host that has their hosting servers in the USA. Space and bandwidth like that are irrelevent for most websites, as most sites are under 10MB in size and use less than half a GB of traffic a month. Companies that offer those sorts of figures will likely to be overselling. I recommend using a provider in NZ who has their servers located in NZ. I have had too many bad experiences with NZ hosting comapnies that use USA servers, with bad uptime. Uptime guarrantees are also worthless, as they often contract out of both hardware and software faults, and they also may only refund you for the period the servers are down for. My old host that used USA servers, my website was down for 4 days, while they transferred backup data from NZ to the USA after the servers harddrives became corrupted. |

They also have had a major outage on their server which caused qute a bit of downtime at www.myhost.co.nz . You want a host that has backup systems in place, so when one server fails all the data is on another server that can kick in straight away reducing the downtime. |
