486877 2006-09-23 22:12:00 Ok, i just instialled a second hard drive becuse i was running out of memory
in the first one. I had a second 160gb HDD in my xbox and i dont really use
it that much, so i took it out and put it in my computer. i mounted it inside
my pc, then hooked up the power and then the IDE ( ribbon cable ) up. The HDD
is a Samsung SP1604N. after i installed it i booted up my pc. The first thing
that came up was a messege. this is what it said. --

Press F1 to Resume.

So i did press f1 and it resumed to the user selection screen and it booted
up as if i never installed a 2nd HDD. Everything worked fine. it even said
Found New Hardare in the toolbar. So after it booted up i went to My
Computer. There i should have saw another LocalDisk icon or something, but
nothing! Just my old HDD. So then i went to Add New Hardware and it scaned
for new hardware and found nothing! then it after selecting," yes, i have
installed the new harware," it gave me a list of hardware installed and one
of them was the 2nd HDD. The Samsung SP1604N. i clicked on it and it said
that this devise is working properly. So if its detecting it why cant i acces
it?! What am i doing wrong?

Please help!

486878 2006-09-23 22:18:00 Ah you mean space not memory.

Memory isnt on a hdd, its in the case on the motherboard.

Use ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to clean up the 1st hdd. It'll get rid of the temp files etc.

If you're using XP go to control panel / computer management / disk management. See if the 2nd hdd shows here. If it does right mouse on it and initialise / format it.

That info you put in, it says the CD and hdd are Primary slave. Is this an error? Or did u mistype it? Did u jumper the 2nd hdd?

And is it (the CD) on Secondary Master or Slave?

486879 2006-09-23 22:22:00 Ok, well i dont see a computer management icon in my control panel so...where else would it be? Motokid600 (11183)
486880 2006-09-23 22:27:00 Its under admin tools in control panel. Thats if you're using XP/2000. Speedy Gonzales (78)
486881 2006-09-23 22:30:00 Ok,im there, but im not seeing the drive here...i can see it in Devise Management, but that doesnt offer any formating options...
EDIT, i dont know why, but im just seeing what u said in ur fierst reply

486882 2006-09-23 22:35:00 I take it:

1. You did connect the IDE to this hdd properly?

2. There is power going to it.

3. You are using XP or 2000?. And not 98 or a previous version of Windows?

Does the 2nd hdd appear in the BIOS under Secondary Master or Slave. Whatever IDE connection its on?

Look on the back of the hdd. Its got a black/blue thing on the pins, this is the jumper. It needs to be on the right set of pins, or else if the jumper is on the same set of pins as something else, you've got this drive on (and both are on master or slave), they'll conflict.. You cant have 2 IDE devices on (jumpered to )Master or Slave, if they're on the same IDE connection (Primary or Secondary). If you've got 2 hdds one should be jumpered as Master the 2nd as slave. If theyre connected to the Primary connection on the motherboard. And configured in the BIOS as well.

1 - Yes
2 - yes
3 im using XP

and i know for a fact that the 2nd hdd is set to slave ( slave means with out that tiny plastic peice that goes in the back of the hdd right? if so then yea its slave)

Not necessarily. Most hdd's (or most IDE devices) have the letters SL MA or CS etched somewhere on top (just above these pins), or somewhere around these pins.

Go into the BIOS and set what the 1st hdd is on (most probably primary Master), and then see which one the 2nd hdd is on (maybe Primary slave, or Secondary Master or slave).
