487299 2006-10-10 06:47:00 why would you bit torrent 50gbs in one night, stop being a nuesance, people like YOU create bad network stability and speeds. jesse_jax (9283)
487300 2006-10-10 08:41:00 well of course i wouldnt actually download 50gigs a day.

just asking if it is really "unlimited downloads at fast speeds' during the off hours

487302 2006-10-10 09:20:00 One thing no-one has raised.... how can one get 'as fast as the line will allow' downstream speeds with only 128k upload? From memory, downloading via TCP at about 4.7MBits/sec will completely saturate a 128KBits/sec upload (with packet acknowledgements), and it's not possible to go faster without increasing the upload speed.

I may be wrong on the 4.7MBits number, but I believe it's around that area.

My computer tells me that sizeof(tcphdr) + sizeof(iphdr) is 40 bytes.
Let's assume we're downloading using the maximum TCP packet size of 65535 bytes.
Also, let's say that each ACK is about, maybe, 192 bytes including header (don't knock my assumption; I don't exactly read RFC793 every night before I go to bed).

128 Kbps tranlates to 16384Bps.

Divided by the (assumed) size of our requests, that's 85.333 ACKs per second.

Multiply that by the maximum TCP packet size, minus the header of 40 bytes:
(65535 - 40) * 85.333 = 5588906.6666...Bps
= 5.33000MBps
= 42.6400Mbps

Of course, I've made some of the worst assumptions known to mankind, so maybe add a margin of error of about a zillion percent.

This post goes out to Corey. Arrogant bugger that one.:D

487303 2006-10-11 04:35:00 i wonder how other ISP's offering ADSL (orcon, ihug, slingshot, etc) will fare seeing everyone here is eager to switch to the Go Large plan. jason_f90 (3544)
487304 2006-10-11 04:56:00 well, orcon has announced its plans to come very soon on monday, so im looking forward to that. jesse_jax (9283)

487306 2006-10-11 07:36:00 well, orcon has announced its plans to come very soon on monday, so im looking forward to that .

where did u get this info? .
their current plans are not bad but they traffic shape and theyre open about . UNLIKE :mad:IHUG:mad: . I wrote an email to them regarding traffic shape . And they gave an unbelivable reply .

Thanks for your email .

It is not ihug policy to shape traffic, nor do we have access to do so .

We are unable to monitor you connection while it physically active, only Telecom are able to do this .

We need you to call and perform speed test info while on the phone to us at ihug and then we need to check the Upstream and down data rates through your router, then we can ring Telecom and get a tunnel shape check done and also verify if you are on or need to be added to their known congestion list .

Once congestion is verified as we will need to perform the mandatory trouble shooting to verify that the issue lies with congestion before a Telecom Faults call can be made and a technician is sent to investigate the local exchange for issues, if you could ring the ihug helpdesk number on the phone number listed below, we can get this process started, thank-you for using mail support services
