If you have a got good firewall etc... you don’t need to worry about that :), we leave our modem on all the time, but the good thing with ours is after the last computer turns off, it disconnects its self from the internet.

487290 2006-09-27 03:13:00 My compters on 24 hours

I leave my Bt to download some Hk dramas or japanese dramas all night.Wake up in the morning to check my email.Read forums such as pcworld and mobile forums.Check out my listing up at zillion and Trademe.
You get the odd people posting up funny stuff on You tube.

Off to Uni.Come back do some study.Do some research online.Watch some dramas.

....

I don't believe I use alot of data but oh man my average per month is 30-40GB

Hmm...I actually didn't think that my daily usage end up so high.

If ihug didn't calculate upload data as well then I think i would be under 30GB

487291 2006-09-27 03:30:00 Well yeah it is a hassle to download them. We have Sky and the good thing is that you just turn on and its there, its like they have subscribed a channel at a delayed time (~ 3 months old I think) and the news are up todate the entertainment/celebrity news are also up todate. The good thing is you can watch movies, dramas, documentaries, up todate news, and what other shows there is, shopping trends, fashion, gardening .. much easier than to use BB. I don't think how you could download so much variety on BB even if you wanted to. I guess you do get the more recent dramas and between you and the others you get to mingle and around and stuff but its impossible to download all the other stuff as well.

But back to the original poster's question/post. The average New Zealander is not going to take advantage of overnight downloads and to do that consistently on a near daily basis. Therefore I think unlimited BB usage is just bull. Yes, we get unlimited BB but what do we have to do to get it.

487292 2006-09-27 09:47:00 Thats alot of time spent on the computer...

yes, it is, i dont do stuff everyday, so those days i stay on the computer, when im doing smoething, i get on my comp about 6pm and stay till 11pm-1am

also, about twice to 3 times a week im downloading while im sleeping, new eps of programs, and programs they only show over seas etc.

Yes you can, they watch UDP port traffic

Oh, you have too much free time Jax! Dont you have a job?

job? pfft, dont count on it, i do 3d modelling on my comp as a hobby/trying to get good for a job. When i get bored, i play some games, watch some vids, then keep doing it, and while im modelling, i download, so ya..

487293 2006-09-29 12:54:00 BIG DEAL...can hardly get rated speed now so how will this improve my lot ?
Would have been better to increase the upload speed instead giving much better value. But thats Telecom for you, never given nothing away, never will until someone else parallels their exchanges/distribution to optic !

487294 2006-09-29 13:51:00 One thing no-one has raised.... how can one get 'as fast as the line will allow' downstream speeds with only 128k upload? From memory, downloading via TCP at about 4.7MBits/sec will completely saturate a 128KBits/sec upload (with packet acknowledgements), and it's not possible to go faster without increasing the upload speed.

I may be wrong on the 4.7MBits number, but I believe it's around that area.

487295 2006-09-29 14:00:00 I often leave my PC / internet on 24/7 and like some posters, it can be easy to blow 700MB in a night. I've just a written a small VB utility to close down a pre-chosen programme (like file sharing) at a pre-set time (like 4pm) and restart it again (at say midnight) to avoid blowing the 700MB limit from 4pm to midnight. It's free for testing / downloading for PF1 users here : www.bizequip.co.nz - I just posted a thread on this in the lounge.
Cheers, Andrew

487296 2006-10-05 14:17:00 Im so glad i found this forum . Explained all the frustrations i have been experiencing with IHUG for the past month or so, ie crap speed all round . That's why im still up after 2am now to find out why overnight downloads can be less than 500mb when i woke up in the morning! :waughh: Why pay for a 30GB/month plan when I cant even get close to 20gb!? :groan:

Is there any way around traffic shaping and port blocking? Are there any good ISPs out there at all!? :help:

How willing do you reckon the new ISP would be to pay for the $99 early contract termination penalty to IHUG on my behalf? LoL .

Thanks for 'listening'!! :D
