| 487183 | 2006-09-27 09:27:00 | Can you let me know via PM what backup systems you have in place? (My boss has a lot of his clients with web drive) Aye, I don't understand your question? I don't work for them, I just host some of my websites with them. This page discusses their server technogies webdrive.co.nz |

| 487184 | 2006-09-27 10:00:00 | I've been using these guys: http://www.kiwiwebhost.co.nz/ for a few years now and I'm very happy with both their price and their response time. The other day I needed to increase my disk storage. I sent an email and it was done within 30 minutes. |

| 487185 | 2006-09-27 10:02:00 | If someone is wanting to host on US servers, the cheapest option is to actually use a USA company directly, instead of going through a NZ company as the middleman.I agree that typically NZ based hosts are more expensive, even those with US based servers. However, this is not always the case. You will almost always be going through a middle-man regardless of whether you are buying from a US run host or an NZ run host as most datacenters don't offer shared hosting directly. Take a look through this list (www.weblist.co.nz) and you will see that some NZ run hosts are very competitive in pricing. I will add though, that you have to make sure you aren't comparing apples and oranges. Obviously if a host offers phone support it will have higher prices than a host that doesn't etc. :) | maccrazy (6741) | ||
| 487186 | 2006-10-03 09:53:00 | I've been with DotEasy for my website the last few months. US-based, but I have never had a problem with any downtime, or speed issues. The main attraction for me was they have free webhosting, 1GB bandwith per month, and 100MB storage, for free, with no pop-ups or banner advertising. They do have other packages with fees that give you higher limits. Depends what you are looking for, but for most standard websites that would probably be plenty of storage space and bandwidth - and I don't think you can beat the price! [edit: referral link removed - please read this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) ] I know that probably sounds like a blant ad for them!! But for me they have been great. Good luck whatever you choose! |

They also have had a major outage on their server which caused qute a bit of downtime at www.myhost.co.nz . You want a host that has backup systems in place, so when one server fails all the data is on another server that can kick in straight away reducing the downtime. Thanks for the mention, Roger ;) I posted that blog item in the interests of transparency, as it is exactly the kind of issue many hosts would sooner sweep under the carpet - and downtime does affect every web host at some point. I'd much sooner be open and honest about it... if that gives us minus points, so be it. We did indeed have a serious issue with one of our servers earlier this year but that said, the same server has otherwise averaged above 99.98% uptime for the last 12 months. I should also point out it is actually the oldest and busiest of our servers and is being phased out at present. Redundant backup servers as you mention would be wonderful in an ideal world, but I would challenge you to find any local web host who runs a complete real-time sync'd backup server for every 'live' server they operate. That's not a solution you'll find anywhere at the cheaper end of the market. I would counter your "Quite Expensive" comment if you're comparing apples with apples - but I'm not here to spam the board, so I'll leave it at that. Thanks for your time, and I hope you keep reading the blog. I really must devote more of my spare time to it :) |

| 487189 | 2006-11-02 06:53:00 | Ok, Image this you have a website with web drive (who's servers are in NZ) & they had a major server issue & they where not answering there phones etc
, you could drive over to there HQ & find out what is happing. Try doing that with a web host that has servers in the US!. And how long will it take to drive from Stewart Island to Auckland? |

| 487190 | 2006-11-02 09:12:00 | And how long will it take to drive from Stewart Island to Auckland? That would depend on how long you could hold your breath whilst driving from Stewart I to Invercargill & across Cook Straight. PJ:rolleyes: |
