487135 2006-09-24 23:49:00 My old pc originally had 1 ram stick 128mb SDRAM pc100 168 pin. now i am trying to add one which is pc133 128sdram 168pin. but at the bootup/bios screen it only shows 144mb. why?. gum digger (6100)
487136 2006-09-25 00:49:00 Some BIOS's are really pedantic about RAM being the same speed. I have never had issues with mixing 100 and 133, but then in this machine it wouldnt accept 333 and 400 (would only read the 400) Myth (110)

No get PC100 ram or get another mobo and different ram altogether.

The videocard maybe using some of that ram.

487139 2006-09-25 07:11:00 definately try a different mobo.

I have 2 pc's of that age. The mobo in 1 of them will quite happily run whatever mix of speed and size ram i care to throw at it. It just doesn't care what gets put in it.

The other mobo gives me some really strange results whenever I try to mix pc100 and 133 ram. (or pc66 and pc100)

Both mobos have the intel 440BX chipset.

Both use AWARD 4.51PG bios (updated)

Therefore the mobo is the deciding factor.

487141 2006-09-25 10:44:00 try a different mobo ??? yeah right!

simply drive different ram. you can get incompatibilitys between stick of ram regaurdless of speed.

also check if you need double sided and tat you can use high denisty modules (eg has 8 chips on it instead of 16, some pc's don't like the 8 chip ram sticks).
