487546 2006-09-26 22:32:00 Help please?

OS/XP - heaps of space on HD & RAM
error message appears when trying to search for something using the "search Companion"

"a file that is required to run search companion cannot be found, you may need to run setup"

so i ran the XP disk (genuine) but it stalled on the black screen with the white "picket fence" type bars at the bottom

oh! before running the disk i did a couple of system restores back 2/3 days but search didn't show up so ran the disk

can someone please get me the search facility back

487547 2006-09-26 22:38:00 "Search companion"? Don't tell me you are refering to the all-time most-hated sinister BonziBUDDY!?!? Renmoo (66)
487548 2006-09-26 23:04:00 no, the search facility from "start-search" for any files, folders, etc. jayal (1291)
487549 2006-09-26 23:17:00 i had alook at this too but no joy there
support.microsoft.com

also perhaps i should mention, a couple of days ago i deleted a whole lot of blue coloured files beginning and anding with $****$ but the restore should've cured that ????

487550 2006-09-27 07:32:00 isn't there someone out there who can help, please? jayal (1291)
487551 2006-09-27 09:23:00 Hey jayal, I'm glad that we are not talking about BonziBuddy here. :D

Perhaps you can give scanning the disk for errors a try? Besides this, there are better file indexing and searching programs such as Google Desktop -> http://desktop.google.com/

Cheers :)

487552 2006-09-27 10:41:00 JamesKan thanks for the reply, got the google search and scan disk no help - sure i can search for files but the problem remains - would really like to know how to re-activate the MS search utility though - have trolled through numerous info sites with no real answer yet jayal (1291)
487553 2006-09-27 10:57:00 Hello again, Jayal. Does the error message still pop up when you access MS Search via Safe Mode?

Cheers :)

487554 2006-09-27 10:59:00 Go start>>run, type 'sfc /scannow', and hit enter. This process will restore all your windows system files to their original versions. It can take ages, and you will need your Windows XP disk. If you have installed any service packs you may need to borrow someone else's disk - sfc requires that the disk service pack version is the same as the installed version. Erayd (23)
487555 2006-09-28 10:23:00 to JamesKan & Bletch, thanks for replying have been busy (work committments can be so annoying) so please excuse the delay - anyway James the problem is there in safe mode and to Bletch, tried the scan with no resolution

as an aside, have reinstalled the OS but the search facility is still missing - spoke to a "tech" re this and his advice, "bring it in and we'll get it fixed, you need to know what you're doing with a re-install of XP" -??

where to from here i'm wondering
