487542 2006-09-26 21:04:00 Hi,
My Dad wants to buy a new LCD monitor. He's a into digital photography so wants something that he can view and edit photos. Also he needs to be able to calibrate the monitor / printer pair so that it prints like it looks.

Suggestions on what specs he should be looking for in a monitor?

You get bonus points if you're into digital photography and so can actually backup what you're saying :p

Cheers,
Nic

487543 2006-09-26 21:24:00 I have seen (though not used) screens which come with a device which you suction-cup to the monitor, and can calibrate it to Pantone colour standards using the software they provide. I can't for the life of me remember what they were called, but I do know that they are incredibly expensive.

In saying that though, most LCD monitors (even cheapie brands) can be colour-adjusted to a certain extent, so it'll just be a matter of printing out something and matching the monitor to it. How accurate you can get it is another story.

Oh - and I am into digital photography, but by no way am I a pro.

I'm no professional, but I'm intersested in digital photography.

I use a LCD philips 170c 17inch, and a HP photosmart 7450 printer,I found they have accurate colour without any tweaking, the printer can be adjusted, and there is some adjustment allowed on the monitior.

I have seen freebie software, that can be installed to further adjust your
colour, but I have never needed it with this combination.

as a matter of interest, the editors I found pretty good is a freebie
called paint.net doesn't have all the professional stuff, but handles most,
and for collages I use microsoft picture it sofware, and cataloges Piacasa 2

the best of luck with your projects.

cheers,

Robby
