487568 2006-09-26 19:29:00 Hi, this problem has me beat.... I have two mice connected in Win XP Prof. and want to run one as a left-handed mouse (for me) and the other as a right handed mouse for the rest of the family. I would have thought this would be a reasonably common scenario but cannot find the solution anywhere. Any suggestions? Thanks, Matt. hairy (11211)

I dont think that will work, but this may

2 user accounts 1 mouse

1 user user account setup up for right handed use
other user account setup for left handed use

The mouse setup as far as this is concerned is in controll panel in the mouse applet. The function for right hand users is "switch primary and secondary buttons" should have no tick and for left hand use have a tick in the box.

good luck

487570 2006-09-26 21:58:00 Thanks for the reply beama. I had thought about different user accounts but our computer is used so much by different people that logging on and off is more painful than manually switching buttons on the mouse. I would have thought someone would have come up with a solution as it would appear to me to be reasonably common problem having a left handed person and right handed person with access to the same computer. I might just have to buy a second PC! Cheers, Matt. hairy (11211)
487571 2006-09-26 23:05:00 Hmm, I have two mice connected here... given that they are both right handed, but will that make any difference?

The main one is a Logitech 7 connected via USB and the other is a cheap PS/2 mouse connected via PS/2 and I have no problems with this...

How do you mean it has you beat? in what way?

487572 2006-09-26 23:25:00 I would like one to operate left handed and one to operate right handed.... ie. on left handed one the right mouse button is the select click and the right handed mouse the left button is the select click. Both mice run no problems but I can run both left handed or both right handed, not one of each if you get my drift. hairy (11211)

I think the problem is that Windows won't let you configure each mouse separately. Even though both mice work Windows only sees one mouse so you can't make one a left-handed mouse (changing the left & right buttons around) while leaving the other as a right-handed mouse.

487574 2006-09-27 00:01:00 Oh I see what you mean now, the easiest way I can think of would have to be multiple accounts unless you manually change the settings... The_End_Of_Reality (334)
487575 2006-09-27 02:27:00 CYaBro... That is exactly the problem. Any ideas? The next part of the process is dissassembling the mouse and swapping the mouse microswitch positions! hairy (11211)
487576 2006-09-27 04:37:00 Hmmm well I just tried this on my laptop, as a test. I configured my USB mouse to be "left handed", and left my touchpad (which is essentially viewed as a PS/2 mouse) "right handed", and it worked fine. USB was left handed, PS2 was right handed. So it is possible!

Edit: I used the extra mouse tools that came with the extra drivers to change my USB mouse, not sure if this makes any difference.

487577 2006-09-27 04:38:00 Hi guys I have a suggestion but not a solution.

If changing accounts is a pain you could get someone (I'm not savvy enough) to write a macro that switches the buttons and then have a shorcut on the desktop to click on to change them over. I'd imagine its only a reg key setting which you just need to read, check what the value is currently and change it to the other setting.

Hope someone else here knows how that might be done. :)

BTW welcome to PressF1!
