487802 2006-09-28 05:51:00 i'm confused on how the memory access time on video cards determine their memory speed . i hear that memory access times are measured in nanoseconds (ns), and he speed of the memory is run in megahertz,

if im looking to tweak my video card's onboard memory to a higher speed, to remove that goddam 3 . 2gb/s bottleneck i have now . .

so ah . . i need to know please, what the memory access time is, and how it affects my memorys rated speeds .

i've got no idea what my mem access time is, coul be 5ns or 4 ns . and i want to go over the 400mhz mark im at now, so does anyone know how to find our your memory access time? and what is the rated speed for it?

487803 2006-09-28 06:54:00 It is very risky to play around with your GPU's memory timings. Incorrect settings can lead to irreversible damage.

What kind of GPU do you have? Once you tell us that a little more help can be offered.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with the timings at all.

487804 2006-09-28 09:15:00 The actual speed at which data can be transferred depends on more than the clock frequency. The clock frequency (or double clock frequency for DDR memory) gives you the rate at which instructions can be sent.

The actual rate at which data can be read depends on a number of other factors including frequency of shifting between different regions of a RAM chip, which is affected by the design of the software/firmware, and the design of the RAM chips themselves.

Unless you're willing to do the research to properly understand what the various settings you're tweaking represent, messing with it is probably a bad idea. The manufacturer will have set at least reasonable defaults.

Read the How To.
Bump it up a little wee bit at a time, play a game, see if its stable, and don't go getting carried away.
