| 487515 | 2006-09-26 12:12:00 | Aaargh. I started up the computer as usual tonight with one worrying exception. My mouse pointer seems to have disappeared. Eventually I noticed that it was stuck on the bottom middle of the screen. If I moved it really quickly I could see it moving up the screen. I tried the usual things, virus scans, restarted, tried system restore, yadda yadda, tried unplugging and replugging the MS optical mouse but nothing has worked. Of course it all works ok using linux so the mouse has not died. Does this mean my WindowsXP registry is borked or something? Does anyone know a way of repairing it? Theres a whole lot of stuff on that particular partition I need to save >< XP works wonderfully except for the lack of mouse pointer though. Haha. |

| 487516 | 2006-09-26 15:41:00 | I went thru this a year or so ago . . . . . . . . might be two years . . . ah well! :rolleyes: I just turned off the puter, unplugged the mouse and re-booted . The wizard jumped up . . . it might've been Windows Dr . Watson, and let the puter run for a few minutes in that condition . I then shut down (Windows key>>U>>U) and plugged the mouse back in . Upon re-boot, it found the mouse again and all was well . |

For some reason XP decided it would load a generic mouse driver on top of the original one, according to the device manager . As soon as I disabled the generic driver and uninstalled it, it was back to business as usual . Can't figure out why it was trying to load the errant driver to start with though . It might be time for another back up and new windows install . The current install is pretty old now (though well maintained, crap does tend to build up) . Haha, that chewed cord scenario did come to mind though . I checked for that but was more expecting mouse chomps (the biological variety) . |
