488249 2006-09-30 03:55:00 Hi Guys,
Just bought a notebook for soon to be uni student daughter.
Am in the process of sorting it out and transfering her data from my PC.

Acer in their wisdom seem to have partitioned it into two equal halves.
Surely XP dosn't need 27 gigs now :D
Bearing in mind she will be light on programs and heavy on music etc, should I resize to 10/ 45 or so ? Is there a Windows utility capable of that ?

one other silly question,
how can I turn off the blinking prompt popups...
I know I haven't got a network connection... please stop telling me :xmouth:

thanks
Pete

488251 2006-09-30 04:06:00 I would say u would need something like Partitionmagic. I dont think Windows can partition or put a partition back together, without formatting / reinstalling it.

If u tried to do it without a 3rd party program, it would most probably corrupt the hdd.

Get this (www.dougknox.com) (right mouse - save as)

From here (http://www.dougknox.com/)

And run it

If you're transferring programs that have been installed already, forget it. They wont work, they'll have to be reinstalled from CD. Or transferred if u have a network, then installed.

488253 2006-09-30 09:51:00 I've always wondered why Acer do this. My Acer notebook also has its hard drive split into two partitions and whilst it's not enough of an annoyance for me to go to the hassle of trying to repartition it, it does frustrate me a bit to have to distribute my personal files between the partitions.

Is there are technical reason why the drive is split in two?

On some systems yup . Like on this the main hdd is 120 GB . . Partitioned in 2 .

20 GB and 92 GB .

If it needs to be formatted, then it only has to format 20 GB, not 120 which would take longer . And its good if you ever get a virus or something nasty .

The other partition would be safe as its a separate partition from the main operating system .

Like the main OS, on this it's on the main partition and the other partition contains the patches/ install files for the video / sound etc .
for the system, if I ever need to reformat . It saves me trying to find the mobo CD .

488256 2006-09-30 12:15:00 Is there anyway to get a battery level meter running on an Acer 3100 without resorting to their horrific widget intrusion ?
sorry I'm a bit grumpy now :annoyed:

Windows should show the battery level, look for the plug icon next to the clock .

Right click desktop, properties, screen saver, Monitor power, Power, advanced, hmmm.....wait a sec, The options I was looking for don't seem to be here. Strange.

Ah well, its a start, Poke around in that general area, their should be a few relivant options to mess with, Including one to show a battery indicator on the task bar.
