488165 2006-09-29 20:40:00 Hey guys have Xtra turned their SPAM Filters off? :illogical

I’ve reported it, complained about it, forwarded copies to spamreport@xtra.co.nz but still I’m getting spamed off the planet.

The SPAM is mainly the Commonwealth Bank one, a stock market tipping report and of course those trying to accommodate my endless need for Viagra.

Maybe Xtra have adopted the approach that all traffic is good traffic, because someone has to pay?

It’s become a right pain. :angry

488166 2006-09-29 20:44:00 Get something like poptray (http://www.poptray.org/)

Then u can add spam to a blacklist / blacklist the whole domain.

And never see it again

488167 2006-09-29 21:21:00 The only problem is they send from a different domain each time.
All ISP spam filters are struggling to cope with the volume of spam at the moment which has increased dramatically in recent weeks.

As well an increasingly amount of spam is being sent as .png or .gif attachments and the spam information is included in the attachment and makes it difficult for the filters to read what is actually being promoted. By adding some random text to the message as well it fools the filters to not flag it as spam purely because of the attachment.

Spam filters are continually being adjusted to try and keep up with the tricks spammers use to try to bypass them but some will get through.
If you get a few there is probably 8 times that amount that has been filtered and you have not received.

Hmmm a bit like MailWasher, must give poptray a try one of these days.

Hi Speedy
if they send from a different domain each time then how does poptray stop
them? Presumably there is some benefit or you would not suggest using it.

It doesnt. But poptray can use wildcards ie: (*@isp).

If spam comes up, just add it to the blacklist after it checks for email (it can check email every 5,10 mins etc, whatever u set it at).

Then go to options white/blacklist, delete the front of the spam and replace it with *@ (dont delete the isp/end part of the spam u added. Like if the spam is xxxxx@google.com u replace the front part with *@ so it'll be *@google.com. Then click on save.

And put one rule in. Name Spam. Account/all accounts. Needed / Any row. And subject contains [SPAM]. And tick delete from server.

And keep enabled ticked.

I found poptray poor compared to mailwasher, which can detect ad compare spam with spam databases

I've noticed an increase in spam via Xtra in recent weeks as well. Before I turned on their filter I would get 50-60 per day, but after turning the filter on, it reduced to 4-5.

It is currently back up to 20 or so per day so something must be wrong. It is all intercepted by Mailwasher anyway (MW only misses one or two per day) but it is still a nuisance.

Cheers

Nothing is wrong, it is is just spammers increasing the use of image-based spam.
Image-based spam contains its unwanted content inside of graphics, making it difficult and even impossible for some spam filters to identify.
www.internetnews.com

As a matter of interest spam mail is approaching 50% of all messages received by ISP mail servers.

Thats the good thing about Poptray. Because it picks up the email without you having to open OE/ whatever, you dont see images (or anything else). You dont even have to open / OE / Outlook etc to see whats in it.

It shows the amount of emails you've received in the taskbar.

All u see is where its from, when it checks for email. If u dont know who the sender is u can right mouse on the sender, then add it to the blacklist, then delete it, or if its from someone u know, u can add it to the whitelist.
