487988 2006-09-29 00:56:00 I have had my computer for a few years now and I have just decided to upgrade it. I have a budget of $500 and need some ideas on what to spend it on.

My current specs are:
AMD Athlon 1.7GHz processor
17inch CRT
32mb GeForce 2 integrated Graphics card (Most needed upgrade)
40Gb hard drive (Most needed upgrade)
512mb RAM

The main reason I want to upgrade my computer is so I can run games like Sims2 and KotOR faster and on a 8x10 resolution.

Oh yeah my motherboard hasnt got any PCIexpress slots

487989 2006-09-29 01:12:00 got an AGP slot? if so get a half decent vid card. that will use most if not all of your $$$. tweak'e (69)
487990 2006-09-29 01:17:00 Yeah i got an agp slot. but i also wanted to expand my hard drive as it is completly full at the moment, so i was looking for a $200 - $300 vid card could someone suggest one. goosebumps50 (11173)
487991 2006-09-29 01:49:00 something like this........ www.ascent.co.nz

i'll let you do the chips comparisions etc. you really want to get away from the budget range but with your system its pointless getting the very best.

487993 2006-09-29 02:45:00 get a AGP 7600GS for ~$250 and a 200gig hdd for ~$150 and a 512MB stick of ram for ~$100

ram and hdd you can get for cheaper and the video card may cost up to $300.
the resulting system would kickarse at just about any game, youd have plenty of storage and a good ammount of ram.

I don't quite agree with 'kickarse' it will certainly improve the performance a lot, but not to the extent of kickarse, the CPU is going to create a bottleneck in some situations... I am looking at doubling my RAM from 2Gb to 4Gb, because I often have less than 10% free when I do a lot of stuff... But the specs you suggested will certainly do the 'average' person, such as the OP is describing The_End_Of_Reality (334)
487995 2006-10-03 10:44:00 My cpu is almost the same so im well aware of the bottle necks his system would have. But a cpu bottle neck lets you turn up the graphics without extra lag. Mirddes (10)
487996 2006-10-03 11:41:00 I have had my computer for a few years now and I have just decided to upgrade it . I have a budget of $500 and need some ideas on what to spend it on .

My current specs are:
AMD Athlon 1 . 7GHz processorIf I were you I probably upgrade this, find the maximum CPU speed that you MOBO can handle and get a secondhand part . Although it looks cheaper but only last you for 6moths if you're a gamer
17inch CRTIf this is OK for you, you don't need to upgrade this
32mb GeForce 2 integrated Graphics card (Most needed upgrade)Find a AGP card that cost around $150-$200 NEW if above you're wasting you money because an AGP can handle 4X-8X
40Gb hard drive (Most needed upgrade)How many GB are you goin to upgrade? 40GB+80GB? A new HDD IDE will cost around $80 . 00
512mb RAMThis will not support the new games but I suggest you to upgrade it around 700MB or above

The main reason I want to upgrade my computer is so I can run games like Sims2 and KotOR faster and on a 8x10 resolution .

Oh yeah my motherboard hasnt got any PCIexpress slots
Does that helped you? I mean don't waste too much money upgrading it because it won't last you long .

487997 2006-10-03 12:28:00 I have a nVidia 6800 AGP 128MB Card here that i can sell for around $180 - $200.

it came from my older system, so its not brand new.

let me know :). works great, no issues with it.

would be good to have a peek in your case to see if you even have an AGP slot, seeing as some of the PC's made around the time that your one would of been made didnt have them, as they relied on the intergrated module.
