you everything Windows will do but not stress out yr machine.
Those GUI based Linux distro's really need 256MB of RAM...

I reckon Windows 98 is an good idea.

488378 2006-09-30 23:54:00 go find an old copy of 98se and put it on it :)
I have a disc sitting here which is legitimate and I do not need. On the front it says Windows 98 (Second Edition) Upgrade for users of Windows 3.1x and Windows 95.

If I were to post that in snail mail to Bellzy would it be of any help ?

I suspect he may need more and if so, will scout around my stuff for the rest.

488379 2006-10-01 01:12:00 You could run a linux distribution with a light window manager such as fluxbox happily on that but you have _way_ too little RAM for decent performance with Windows XP. You need 256MB to get reasonable performance.

When you are low on memory the operating system pages memory to disk (windows calls this "virtual memory". Since Windows uses a file for paging rather than a dedicated partition, this can lead to heavy fragmentation of smaller hard drives. Although defragmenting disks is usually unneccesary on a modern machine, you will want to do it on a computer like that at least weekly to clean up the mess left behind.

The cheapest fix is to find how much memory the motherboard can support (probably still not much) and increase the memory as high as you can. Then again, old RAM sticks are more expensive than modern ones. Research the costs and decide whether the upgrade is worthwhile for you.

488381 2006-10-01 05:39:00 Re-formatting hard drives is NOT normally necessary and doesn't solve the issues. I don't know why it is that people think that re-formatting is the cure-all to end all problems. It doesn't!
I think I've only had to reformat TWO drives in my entire time spent working on computers - and those were ones that had corrupt drive tables.

As mentioned elsewhere, you need to up-spec your machine. XP is hard on resources, RAM, processor etc.
